NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans have signed nine guys, and I ran through eight of them in an earlier post.
It’s still a team with a lot of holes, some that it will still seek to address in free agency, some that it will attack in the draft, and some that it will try to deal with using both avenues.
My ranking of the Titans' remaining needs…
Right tackle: The Titans' tackles beyond Taylor Lewan right now are Jamon Meredith, Terren Jones and Will Poehls. While it would be great for one of them to win the job -- Meredith has some experience and good size -- the Titans need a right tackle to complete what they hope can grow into a good line. Be it a veteran or a draft pick, there has to be an addition here.
Cornerback: San Francisco free agent Perrish Cox is scheduled to visit today. The Titans are happy with Jason McCourty as their No. 1 corner, but beyond that, they need better options. Blidi Wreh-Wilson was bad in his first year starting, but still has a chance. My sense is the team is down on nickelback Coty Sensabaugh.
Quarterback: Marcus Mariota could be the pick at No. 2, but I still don’t see it. The Titans need a third guy, ideally one who could put pressure on Zach Mettenberger and force him to win the starting job. But the quarterbacks beyond Jameis Winston and Mariota in the draft are not very attractive, and the veteran options are bad. Matt Moore is the probably the best of the bunch. Any quarterback needs a right tackle, better receivers and upgrades on a defense that can help him get the ball back.
Receiver: They added Harry Douglas, but still are only really three deep with Kendall Wright, Justin Hunter and Douglas. And Hunter has done little to give the team faith he will grow into what it initially projected.
Outside linebacker: Yes, it’s still here. It’s moved down from the top with Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan on the roster. But 3-4 defenses need depth among edge rushers and I still expect a draft pick to join the group.
Running back: I don’t expect anything that comes with a big financial investment. Look for Shonn Greene to be cut and Antonio Andrews to get a chance to be the big back in the committee. They are hoping Bishop Sankey takes a big step. Dexter McCluster is still in the mix. But Leon Washington is a free agent and they need to let him walk. I expect a mid-round draft pick to be added to the bunch.
Kick returner: With Washington likely gone, the Titans need someone to handle kickoff returns. McCluster should be able to handle it if he’s needed. One of the additions at receiver or corner will also likely be a candidate there.
