49ers Camp Report: Day 9

A daily review of the hot topics coming out of the San Francisco 49ers training camp:

  • The lively 49ers’ training camp continued Sunday. Starting cornerback Chris Culliver was taken off the field by coach Jim Harbaugh after a hit on receiver David Reed in a non-tackling drill. Culliver was not sent to the locker room. That’s where receiver Anquan Boldin was sent by Harbaugh in the team’s previous practice Friday night. Boldin scuffled and threw a football at cornerback Darryl Morris. Shortly before that incident, linebacker Chase Thomas and running back Jewell Hampton tangled.

  • Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was his usual honest self Sunday. He said defensive lineman Tank Carradine is making too many mental mistakes and it could keep him from the field in games. The highly-regarded Carradine missed his rookie season last year as he recovered from a torn ACL. I wouldn’t be too overly concerned about Carradine’s issues. It’s his first NFL camp. The light should come on for Carradine, who easily would have been a first-round pick if he wasn’t injured.

  • As expected, Quinton Dial and Mike Purcell worked at nose tackle with starter Glenn Dorsey perhaps out for the year with a torn bicep. Dorsey was injured Friday night. Once Ian Williams (last year’s original starter who broke his leg in Week 2) comes back, I can see Williams and Dial getting a lot of work at nose tackle in the regular season. Dorsey will soon have surgery and the 49ers will have a better idea of his recovery time then.

  • Rookies, center Marcus Martin (third round) and linebacker Aaron Lynch (fifth) practiced for the first time of training camp. They were both injured. Both Martin and Lynch should get a chance to contribute as rookies. Martin has a chance to beat out Daniel Kilgore for the starting job at some point. Because Martin missed so much time, Kilgore has a comfortable lead in the race.

  • Defensive tackle Demarcus Dobbs was back at practice after missing a few days for a personal reason.

  • Monday is a big day. They will practice inside Levi’s Stadium for the first time and some fans will be there to watch. It starts at 1 p.m. PT.
