CHICAGO -- Thin at tight end, the Chicago Bears agreed to terms with former Miami Dolphins player Dion Sims.

At 6-foot-4, 271 pounds, Sims’ in-line blocking should help open holes for second-year running back Jordan Howard. The Bears made news by picking up free-agent quarterback Mike Glennon, but the strength of Chicago’s offense in 2017 is likely to be their ground game.

Terms: Three-years, $18 million with $10 million guaranteed, according to the NFL Network.

Grade: Solid B. The Bears have a clear need at the position. Veteran Zach Miller -- when healthy -- is an effective target in the passing game, but he’s not much of a blocker. Sims, however, is an excellent blocker, and slightly underrated as a pass-catcher -- 26 receptions for 256 yards and four touchdowns in 2016. Sims just turned 26 years old.

What it means: Chicago just got better at tight end. Miami wanted to keep Sims, but kudos to Ryan Pace for stealing him away. Dolphins coach Adam Gase thought Sims had the skills to develop into an all-around tight end. Indications are that Sims will have that chance here in Chicago. Miller is talented, not to mention a great guy inside the building, but he has a long history of injuries. Adding depth was/and still is essential. Daniel Brown, who re-signed for one year, is also in the mix. Keep in mind, the 2017 draft class is loaded at tight end. It would be a surprise if the Bears don’t also address the position via the draft.

What’s the risk: Not much. Sims will face a little more pressure in Chicago. Fans probably want him to contribute more in the passing game. But the risk here is low compared to some of the Bears’ other free-agent signings.
