The Baltimore Ravens hold the No. 26 pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Over a span of two weeks, the Ravens blog will take a quick look at 10 prospects who might be available and be a fit for Baltimore at that spot. We wind down the second week with a local prospect:
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
Chances he's available at No. 26: The ESPN draft analysts don't think there's a very good chance that Johnson falls to the Ravens. Mel Kiper Jr. has the Steelers taking Johnson at No. 22, and Todd McShay has the Cardinals selecting him at No. 24. Steve Muench believes Johnson could go as high as No. 15 to the 49ers. Others teams who've been linked to Johnson include the Chargers (No. 17), Eagles (No. 20) and Panthers (No. 25).
Why he'd be a good pick for the Ravens: It would make for a good story because Johnson played football at nearby River Hill High School, the same place as Ravens wide receiver Michael Campanaro. It also doesn't hurt that some consider Johnson the best cover corner in the draft. Johnson is a quick learner and has the aggressiveness to develop into a playmaker. He's considered one of the safer picks in the first round. There are no off-the-field issues, and he was a three-year starter in college. The Ravens could pair Johnson with Jimmy Smith and be set at cornerback for the next five years.
Why he wouldn't: His lanky frame (6-foot, 188 pounds) is a concern in terms of durability at the NFL level and his effectiveness in run support. Johnson needs to add more strength, although he plays bigger than his listed weight. His aggressive style of play can get him in trouble on double moves, and he was flagged nine times over the last two seasons.
Extra point: Pro Football Focus listed Johnson among their "Buyer Beware" prospects at cornerback. He missed a tackle once every 5.1 attempted, tied for the ninth-worst of all draft-eligible cornerbacks in this class, according to PFF.
