Betting tips, picks for Western Conference finals Game 1

Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers has three goals and five assists in 11 games this postseason. Curtis Comeau/Icon Sportswear

A repeat Western Conference finals matchup from 2024 between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars offers plenty of intrigue for bettors.

Can Mikko Rantanen change the fortunes of the Stars, who lost this matchup last season? Is Stuart Skinner completely over his shaky performances from early in the playoffs? Will Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard combine for 17 points in just six games like they did against the Stars last year? Will the Dallas power play be completely silenced again, after going 0-for-14 against Edmonton in last season's series?

All odds accurate as of publish time. For more, go to ESPN BET.

Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars
Game 1: American Airlines Center, Dallas; Wednesday, 8 p.m. ET

  • Moneyline: Oilers (+105); Stars (-125)

  • Puck Line: Oilers +1.5 (-250); Stars -1.5 (+185)

  • Over/Under: 6.5 (+110/-130)

Prior to Game 1 is the only chance to attack the overarching offers on ESPN BET for the series. There are a few to note:

Zach Hyman series total goals; Over 1.5 (-150): Hyman had three of his 27 goals in the regular season during two games against the Stars in March, and he scored three times against them during last year's Conference Finals.

Mikko Rantanen; Player most points in series (+500): This is just about the odds. McDavid only leads him by a hair in points per game this postseason (1.55 to 1.46), but McDavid's odds for most points have a significantly lower payout at -105. If you are backing the Stars, this is a quality pairing bet.

Stars to win Game 1 and lose the series (+375): If, on the other hand, you are backing the Oilers, these Game 1-turned-Uno-reverse-card bets are an intriguing way to boost the payout especially when the favored team starts on the road. The series line is close, but the Oilers (-120) are the favorites against the Stars (Even) heading into Game 1. With the home-ice advantage, you can back the Stars for the opener, but believe in the Oilers for the long haul and boost the payout.

As for Game 1 itself, the Stars have been enjoying home cooking all postseason, with a 6-1 record in Dallas.

The trio of Rantanen, Roope Hintz and Mikael Granlund have been almost single-handedly finishing all opponents with seven goals at five-on-five (and only two against) through the opening rounds. That disparity stands up at home, with four goals four and one against across seven games. A parlay could be Rantanen over 0.5 total goals, Granlund over 0.5 total points and Hintz over 0.5 total assists to push the payout to +565.

Despite the over/under being set at 6.5, the over (+110) is definitely in play. These teams totaled seven and nine goals in the two games they played in March.
