The Tennessee Titans open training camp on July 29 at Saint Thomas Sports Park in Nashville, Tennessee. Here's an early 53-man roster projection:
QUARTERBACKS (2): Marcus Mariota, Matt Cassel
Mariota said he will be 100 percent ready for training camp after breaking his right fibula in Week 16. The Titans could keep just one of Cassel and Alex Tanney, but they have a decision to make because Tanney is out of eligibility for the practice squad. He would need to make the 53-man roster if the Titans don't want to lose him.
RUNNING BACKS (3): DeMarco Murray, Derrick Henry, Khalfani Muhammad
The Titans might have one of the best one-two punches at running back in the NFL and added seventh-round pick Muhammad in the draft. Henry, who ran for 490 yards and five touchdowns on 110 carries, could have an even bigger role in 2017.
FULLBACK (1): Jalston Fowler
Fowler is entering his third season in Tennessee and completes an impressive backfield for the Titans.
WIDE RECEIVERS (6): Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews, Taywan Taylor, Eric Decker, Tajae Sharpe, Eric Weems
The addition of Decker means there's a lot of talent at receiver and makes it perhaps the strongest unit on the team. Weems, who signed as a free agent during the offseason, could earn his spot on the roster with his special-teams play.
TIGHT ENDS (3): Delanie Walker, Jonnu Smith, Phillip Supernaw
Walker is one of the more reliable tight ends in the league and Smith, a third-round pick from this year's draft, could also see a role on offense. If the Titans wanted to keep a fourth tight end as they have in the past, they could keep Jerome Cunningham.
OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Taylor Lewan, Jack Conklin, Ben Jones, Dennis Kelly, Brad Seaton, Quinton Spain, Josh Kline, Tim Lelito, Sebastian Tretola, Corey Levin
According to ESPN Stats & Information, while the Titans have the lowest cash value for offensive linemen, they are one of two teams whose starting offensive linemen each had a grade of 80 or higher by Pro Football Focus. The Titans' running game ranked fifth in yards before contact last season. Tretola could be the odd man out if the Titans decide to keep just nine offensive linemen.
DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Jurrell Casey, DaQuan Jones, Angelo Blackson, Sylvester Williams, Karl Klug, Mehdi Abdesmad
The Titans didn't draft a single defensive lineman, showing their belief in the unit which general manager Jon Robinson called one of the team's "stronger groups" this offseason.
LINEBACKERS (10): Brian Orakpo, Derrick Morgan, Aaron Wallace, Kevin Dodd, Josh Carraway, Avery Williamson, Jayon Brown, Wesley Woodyard, Daren Bates, Nate Palmer
Williamson led the Titans in tackles last season, finishing with a career-high 103 combined to go with two sacks and a forced fumble.
SAFETIES (4): Johnathan Cyprien, Kevin Byard, Da'Norris Searcy, Brynden Trawick
The Titans gave up an NFL-worst 2,101 yards after the catch last season, according to ESPN Stats & Info. To help the struggling pass defense, the Titans signed Cyprien, who had 128 tackles, which was more than any other defensive back in the NFL last season.
CORNERBACKS (5): Logan Ryan, Adoree' Jackson, Brice McCain, LeShaun Sims, D'Joun Smith
Ryan is a big addition to the Titans' secondary, which finished 30th in passing defense last season, allowing an average of 269 passing yards per game. The former Patriot made 92 tackles last season, most in the NFL by a cornerback, according to ESPN Stats & Info. The Titans also used a first-round pick on Jackson to round out the revamping of the secondary.
SPECIAL TEAMS (3): Ryan Succop, Brett Kern, Beau Brinkley
Succop had the third-highest field goal percentage last season, making 91.7 percent of his field goal attempts, including 9 of 11 kicks over 30 yards.
