Most significant move: Prevalent thinking was the Titans would keep at least five receivers. But they didn’t only cut seventh-rounder Tre McBride, who showed little in camp and the preseason. They also cut veteran Hakeem Nicks, who got a strong look high in the rotation at times. Nicks received a $250,000 roster bonus when he signed a one-year deal in April, so the finances of cutting him weren’t a big deal. The Titans have just four receivers for now in Kendall Wright, Harry Douglas, Justin Hunter and Dorial Green-Beckham. Meanwhile, they have five tight ends in Delanie Walker, Anthony Fasano, Craig Stevens, Chase Coffman and Phillip Supernaw. That’s an unusual roster shape, and waiver claims could change the look of things at receiver and tight end in the next day.
Young depth on the line: The Titans kept eight offensive linemen, and will start rookie third-round pick Jeremiah Poutasi at right guard. Veteran reserve Jamon Meredith can play tackle and guard. Two kids will join him as the depth. Sixth-rounder Andy Gallik out of Boston College enhanced his value by showing the team he can play guard. And undrafted rookie guard Quinton Spain grabbed a spot, edging Will Poehls, who was on the practice squad in 2014. Spain has also played some tackle.
What’s next: The Titans hold the No. 2 spot in the waiver claim order, and they certainly will comb over potential help at receiver and at cornerback. Receiver is a position in which a guy might be able to plug in to some degree and help. But Ken Whisenhunt said it’s difficult to bring guys in a week before the opener and to expect them to contribute right away. Rookie Deiontrez Mount and Jonathan Massaquoi made the team, as did Justin Staples, but the Titans can’t feel great about this trio as the primary backups to Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan at outside linebacker.
Titans’ moves: Cut WR Hakeem Nicks, T Byron Stingily, G Josue Matias, T/G Will Poehls, WR Tre McBride, WR Rico Richardson, RB David Fluellen, QB Alex Tanney, WR Jacoby Ford, FB Zach Boren, CB Ri’Shard Anderson, C Gabe Ikard, DB Khalid Wooten, DB Jemea Thomas, DL Isaako Aaitui, WR Josh Stewart, LB Andy Studebaker and LB Kaelin Burnett. Placed LB Zaviar Gooden, LB J.R. Tavai and LB Yawin Smallwood on injured reserve.
