Less 'wild' Christine Michael has Seahawks teammates, coaches believing

SEATTLE -- The summer of Christine Michael continued Thursday night as the Seattle Seahawks running back carried 10 times for 55 yards in the team's second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Michael has rushed 17 times for 99 yards (5.82 YPC) in two games, and by all indications, he will have a role on offense once the regular-season starts.

Seahawks fans have bought into the Michael hype before, only to be let down. Last summer, the team traded him to the Dallas Cowboys for a seventh-round pick. The Cowboys ended up releasing Michael, and he landed on the Washington Redskins' practice squad before rejoining the Seahawks late in the season.

This time around, teammates and coaches insist that Michael has changed. Below is a rundown of what they said about Michael after Thursday night's game.

Doug Baldwin: "He’s different. I think going away for awhile, he was able to take some time to evaluate himself as a football player. And then when he came back, he started fresh, and he worked his tail off. And he spent a lot of time in the playbook, working on his craft. I know specifically with him just in terms of catching the ball and things that he wanted to do, he wanted to elevate his game in terms of the passing game. And so, he’s worked really hard to work to get where he’s at. So nothing’s really changed. Sometimes you need a kick-start like that."

Earl Thomas: "I think he’s different in the way he’s running the ball. He’s very patient. He’s riding the wave. And it seems like the game’s slowed down. He really understands the scheme of this running game now. He’s not just running it all wild. He’s being creative, setting up his runs, and it’s exciting to see."

Justin Britt: "I think I heard Russell [Wilson] say he’s really tuned into his craft and really evolved and became a pro. Not that he wasn’t a pro, but he’s become more of a pro and is really determined to be great. The whole building can see that. His work ethic is off the charts."

Wilson: "Last year when he came back, I remember C-Mike, he's always had this certain type of burst and certain type of speed. But he really uses it all the time now, and he really thinks about, 'Hey, I can make this play. I can make this run. I can get to the end zone.' And his desire to get first downs, his desire to get to the end zone, it really shows up, and he does it every day in practice. And when you do it in practice every day, you expect great things on gameday. And so that's why that's showing up."

Pete Carroll: "His consistency is really much, much improved in that he’s seeing the line of scrimmage really well. He’s taking advantage of the plays. He really ran kind of wild sometimes and was impatient at times. His sense for stuff, the expectations of how the plays should come out and how they should read and having the ability to really bounce the football on teams -- because he’s really quick and really can get out laterally -- is showing up more consistently. Really if you look back at the last year, I think he’s kind of looked like this, and he’s just an improved version of it again this time around.

"Just because he’s growing and he’s maturing, he’s more concerned about all of the things that are really important -- his reads, his pass-protection stuff, his ball-catching skills, everything is up. And I think he’s taking care of the football better as well. I think all of his stuff fundamentally is more available to him, because I think in general, he’s just more mindful of how to play the position. He’s more tuned in. And he’s just matured really. And so I think all aspects of his game have improved."
