San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa was voted AFC West rookie of the year by the four reporters covering the division for ESPN.com.
Paul Gutierrez, Oakland Raiders reporter: The No. 3 overall pick of last spring’s draft didn't play in the first four games of 2016 due to an ugly holdout and hamstring injury, but once he suited up, it was hard to stop him. With an ever-churning motor, the defensive end produced a sparkling debut; he sacked Raiders quarterback Derek Carr twice. Bosa sacked Carr again in Week 15, and his 10½ sacks in 12 games led all rookies. Yes, Bosa came as advertised out of Ohio State.
Jeff Legwold, Denver Broncos reporter: The season certainly began with some drama, given that he was the last rookie to sign a contract, but Bosa consistently ratcheted up his play as the season progressed. In the last five games of the season combined, he had six sacks and 19 tackles. He consistently affected play, disrupted things along the line of scrimmage and led all of the league’s rookies with 10.5 sacks. He added 41 tackles and a forced fumble. But his 17 tackles for loss were most telling in his impact. Not bad for a guy who saw a contract offer pulled before training camp. He missed training camp in the continued contract squabble, then missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury. Those last 12 games, however, showed he’s going to be a problem for offensive lines throughout the division for some time.
Adam Teicher, Kansas City Chiefs reporter: It’s difficult to say where the Chiefs would have finished this season without wide receiver and kick returner Tyreek Hill, but it’s fair to believe they wouldn’t have compiled a 12-4 record, won the AFC West or earned a first-round playoff bye. Hill led the Chiefs with 12 touchdowns, and he scored eight of them from longer than 30 yards out (three as a receiver, two as a runner and three as a punt or kickoff returner). Hill provided the Chiefs with a legitimate big-play threat, something they didn’t truly have since losing running back Jamaal Charles to a knee injury in 2015.
Eric Williams, San Diego Chargers reporter: Hard to go with anyone else but Bosa here. The Ohio State product exceeded expectations and proved doubters wrong in his rookie season, and he should be one of the best edge rushers in the NFL for years to come. Bosa is part of a productive 2016 draft class for the Chargers that included tight end Hunter Henry, inside linebacker Jatavis Brown and punter Drew Kaser.
