Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell called his work with Owens Recovery Science 'CRAZY!!!' in a recent tweet. Not sure if it's crazy, but it's certainly intriguing.
The San Antonio-based Owens focuses on maintaining muscles around a rehabbing knee using a treatment called blood flow restriction (BFR). Bell tore his medial collateral ligament in Week 8 of the regular season and is likely working to strengthen the core leg muscles during what's considered a lengthy rehab process.
I spoke briefly with Owens chief of human performance optimization Johnny Owens, who can't comment on individual clients, but said the company works with more than 20 professional teams. The treatment "helps get the leg back to the strength it needs to be," Owens said. Athletes can basically lift lower-body weights a week after a surgical knee repair, Owens said .
Check this great feature from ESPN's Stephania Bell on how Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard utilized this treatment.
The Steelers say they are putting no timetable restrictions on Bell, who hopes to return for Week 1 of the 2016 regular season.
