Steelers will get better read on Marcus Peters at combine

ESPN analyst Todd McShay has the Pittsburgh Steelers taking cornerback Marcus Peters with their first pick in his latest mock draft.

McShay also has Peters as his top-rated cornerback in the draft and the No. 18 player overall.

The problem with Peters is that he did not finish the 2014 season with the Washington Huskies, being dismissed from the team last November after clashing with the coaches.

The Steelers are looking to add an impact cornerback, either through free agency or the draft, and the position is one they have too often neglected in recent drafts.

The question the Steelers have to answer with a talent such as Peters is whether they would draft a player early who was kicked off his college team.

Kevin Colbert did not rule it out when talking in general about players in the draft who have potential character issues.

"You're going to look at his body of work as a player and his body of work as a person and try to figure out what happened," the Steelers' general manager said earlier this week. "Any kind of character evaluations you have to look for what's the truth and whether or not you want to deal with the truth."

The Steelers will get significant exposure to Peters next week at the NFL scouting combine. He will be one of the more intriguing players in Indianapolis as he works out and meets with teams during the interviews that are Colbert's favorite part of the combine.

Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin will interview around 60 players at the combine while their assistant coaches are expected to meet with 100 to 120 players in Indianapolis.

The Steelers should come away from the combine with a better feel for players such as Peters, who have characters concerns.

"If there's a player that has something, we'll try to find out what the truth is and whether or not we think we should take a risk," Colbert said, "or whether that player is worth the risk based on not just talent but his ability to be able to overcome whatever his issue was."
