Zach Ertz's big play was a 'pick' or an accident

PHILADELPHIA – A pick is in the eye of the beholder.

After the Philadelphia Eagles' 23-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills, the feeling in the visiting locker room was that Josh Huff set a pick on Zach Ertz’s 41-yard reception. It was a significant play. Ertz’s catch-and-run put the Eagles in to position for the game-winning field goal.

On the play, Ertz lined up in the slot. He ran toward the sideline. Huff lined up outside. He ran toward the middle of the field. Huff and Bills safety Corey Graham collided.

Graham was supposed to cover Ertz. After the collision, Ertz caught a pass from Sam Bradford and turned upfield. It would have been a modest play – probably enough for a first down – but it became much bigger because Ertz barreled his way past cornerback Leodis McKelvin.

“I don’t do it very often,” Ertz said. “It felt really good to be able to run somebody over. I don’t think I’ve done that since college. It was a good feeling.”

Bills running back Boobie Dixon said after the game that Huff set an illegal pick.

“The play at the end of the game, when they ran the pick route -- it was a pick route -- but I guess we’re not gonna talk about that,” Dixon said, according to ESPN’s Mike Rodak. “They made that play. That was the turning point in the game, I thought that’s when they kind of stole the momentum from us. It’s questionable, you know?”

Bills coach Rex Ryan said the Eagles “blocked our guy.”

“Josh kind of ran into my guy or ran in front of my guy,” Ertz said after the game. “So I really didn’t have anybody covering me.”

Watching the video, Huff appears to run directly into Graham. The collision leaves Huff lying on the field. Athletic trainers had to come out to tend to him.

“We ran a slant [Huff] and a flat route [Ertz],” Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. “We thought they would be in man [coverage]. Both routes would get you the first down.. It was a quick-gain throw for us. We could protect it and get the ball out quick for Sam.”

As for the collision, Kelly blamed the Bills.

“I think the defensive back threw our guy into their guy,” Kelly said. “We weren’t trying to do anything. Josh Huff was trying to run a slant route and trying to get open. That’s the quarterback’s first read. If the slant’s covered, then come to the flat route.”

McKelvin lined up across from Huff. He bumped him as Huff came off the line of scrimmage. But it didn't look as if McKelvin “threw” Huff into Graham. Huff was left in Graham’s path and braced himself for impact. The two men collided. It still would have been a 3- or 4-yard gain if McKelvin had made a good tackle.

Instead, it was a 41-yard gain. Whether it was a nice play or an illegal pick remains in the eye of the beholder.
