QB Allan Bridgford out at Cal?

Cal's crowded quarterback competition may have thinned out a bit.

According to reports from some Bay Area outlets, quarterback Allan Bridgford has left the team to weigh his options.

"He kind of got some news from us that he was going to get some reduced reps. Decided he's going to take a day or two to kind of assess things," head coach Sonny Dykes told the San Jose Mercury News.

Bridgford is the most experienced quarterback of the group and the only one with actual game experience. Last season he was the immediate backup to Zach Maynard and he appeared in four games and started two when Maynard was out at the end of the season. He also started the first quarter of the season opener. He completed 31 of 68 passes (45 percent) for 277 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

"He wanted to take a day or two to consider things," Dykes told the San Francisco Chronicle's John Crumpacker. "He's got to think some things over with his family. I would expect to have a discussion with him by the end of the week."

Jared Goff, Zach Kline and Austin Hinder have been getting the majority of reps during the spring session. The Bears are installing a new up-tempo offense under Dykes, who replaced Jeff Tedford as head coach after the Bears went 3-9 in 2012.

"I hope he stays," Dykes told the Chronicle. "He's put a lot of work into our program. We were going to try to give some other guys heavier reps. It's always being evaluated every day. We rep the guys we think are ahead of the other guys."
