Packers replicate cold conditions inside

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Mike McCarthy didn't have to take the Green Bay Packers outside on Wednesday to replicate the conditions his players will deal with during Sunday's NFC divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field.

He just opened the doors to the Don Hutson Center and let the cold air blow in.

It was cold enough outside – temperatures hovered around zero most of the late morning and early afternoon – that they were able to chill the Packers' indoor practice facility to 22 degrees, which is almost exactly what the latest weather forecast calls for on Sunday.

"I was told it was an all-time Green Bay Packers record," McCarthy said of the temperature inside the Hutson Center. "That’s a big deal when you do that."

Receiver Jordy Nelson was surprised they were able to make it that cold inside.

"He wanted to get down to like 30 degrees," Nelson said.

When told it was 22, Nelson said: "Nice."

That's one way to describe it.

In some cases when preparing for cold-weather games, McCarthy takes the team outside for a portion of practice, but the entire session on Wednesday was conducted inside because of strong wind conditions.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the only player who didn't make it down to practice -- he remained at the stadium to get treatment on his strained left calf -- but he does not think the cold weather will impact his injury.

"No, not concerned about the cold," Rodgers said. "I think it might actually help a little bit."

Rodgers did not say why that might be the case.

Speaking of help, McCarthy downplayed the idea that the cold weather would be an advantage for the Packers.

"I'm not counting on the weather," McCarthy said.

He's just making sure his team is prepared for it.
