NFC North kicking (!) update

Of all things, we have enough material for an NFC North kicking news roundup as Thursday concludes. Let's, uh, push through:

  • "Kickalicious:" We noted last month that the Detroit Lions worked out Norwegian place-kicker Havard Rugland, who rose to fame after posting a trick-kick video on YouTube. (Link here.) Thursday, the Lions signed Rugland, who is known as "Kickalicious." He'll be an interesting sidelight to offseason practices and training camp, but at this point it's difficult to consider him credible competition for newly-signed veteran David Akers. You do wonder if he could serve as a kickoff specialist if the Lions choose to a devote a roster spot to one.

  • Punter visit: The Lions also hosted Appalachian State punter Sam Martin on a visit, according to Tim Twentyman of the Lions' web site, as they work to find a punter for 2013 and beyond. Martin could be a late-round draft pick or perhaps a highly-sought undrafted free agent.

  • More clues: The Minnesota Vikings have also hosted Martin on a visit, according to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com. Consider it another sign that they are evaluating options for replacing incumbent Chris Kluwe. Earlier this week, we noted the Vikings appeared to have worked out LSU punter Brad Wing. I've confirmed that workout took place April 4.
