Jets' Brandon Marshall, Darrelle Revis face off, and it's just football, man

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Three days after their highly-publicized practice altercation, New York Jets stars Brandon Marshall and Darrelle Revis matched up several times on Monday. There were no fireworks, no trash talking, no unnecessary roughness. It was just clean, competitive football between two of the best at their respective positions.

This wasn't their first post-skirmish practice (there was Saturday night), but this was the first time they actually went head-to-head since The Dustup Heard 'Round Florham Park.

Unofficially, they faced each other five times in one-on-one drills, plus a handful of times in team drills. Call it a draw.

The most competitive period was the one-on-one drill. Marshall caught two balls on Revis, including a long touchdown throw from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Revis played blanket coverage on two other plays, resulting in an interception and an incomplete pass. He caught a break on a third, as Fitzpatrick overthrew an open Marshall in the end zone. Later, in team drills, Revis made a nice pass breakup on a ball thrown to Marshall.

The intensity was nowhere close to last Friday night, when the two players nearly came to blows. Marshall was incensed because he felt Revis took a cheap shot, while Revis shrugged it off, saying, "It's just football, man."

It got lost in the fallout, but the real story is Revis' surgically repaired right wrist. He's practicing fully without any apparent residual issues from surgery, and that's big for the Jets. He's using his right hand to aggressively jam receivers at the line of scrimmage, doing what he does best. After sitting out the offseason, he's working his way back into football shape, but he has plenty of time before season opener.

Other practice notes:

  • Backup quarterback Geno Smith had one of his best days of camp, especially in the red zone. He made good decisions and was accurate with most of his passes. Coach Todd Bowles, not one for gushing, tried to keep in perspective when asked if he's been "impressed" with Smith.

"I wouldn't call it impressed with anybody," Bowles said. "I think he's made some progress and he's made some strides. We'll see Thursday and the next couple of games, but he's doing a good job."

The Jets open the preseason Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bowles wouldn't reveal his quarterback rotation, but Smith should see at least a quarter of action as the No. 2.

  • Running back Khiry Robinson was activated from the physically unable to perform list, but he was limited to individual drills. ... Wide receiver Eric Decker (leg soreness) sat out, but he's expected to practice on Tuesday. ... Running back Matt Forte (hamstring) remained on the sideline. He has yet to practice. ... The list of injured players who sat out includes Kyle Williams (leg), running back Bernard Pierce (hamstring), cornerback Dexter McDougle, and linebacker Trevor Reilly (undisclosed). ... Rookie cornerback Juston Burris (thigh) and tight end Zach Sudfeld (knee) returned.
