Jason Pierre-Paul's status affects Giants' roster decisions on defense

If Jason Pierre-Paul signs his franchise tender, the Giants will have to carry him on the 53-man roster. Tim Heitman/USA TODAY Sports

Here's a position-by-position look at who stays and who goes when the New York Giants make their final cuts Saturday.

Quarterbacks (2): Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib. (cut: Ricky Stanzi). Nothing to see here.

Running backs (4): Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams, Shane Vereen, Orleans Darkwa. (cut: Kenneth Harper). Or here.

Fullback (1): Henry Hynoski. (cut: Nikita Whitlock). In spite of Whitlock's odd turn at defensive tackle in the fourth quarter of Thursday's preseason finale.

Wide receiver (6): Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Dwayne Harris, Geremy Davis, Preston Parker (cut: James Jones, Julian Talley, Corey Washington). Guessing at that last spot, which could go to either Parker, Jones or Washington. I went with Parker because they'll need someone for the slot if Cruz has to sit out the first game or two, though Harris could play there as well.

Tight end (3): Larry Donnell, Daniel Fells, Jerome Cunningham. (cut: Adrien Robinson). The end for Robinson, a 2012 draft pick who never lived up to what they imagined for him.

Offensive line (9): OT Ereck Flowers, G Justin Pugh, C Weston Richburg, G John Jerry, G/T Geoff Schwartz, OT Marshall Newhouse, G/T Bobby Hart, C/G Dallas Reynolds, G Adam Gettis. (PUP: Will Beatty) (cut: OT Emmett Cleary, OT Sean Donnelly, C Brett Jones). Possible they could keep one of the tackles over Gettis. They like Jones, but he's likely not ready yet, and he sprained his knee Thursday night.

Defensive end (6): Jason Pierre-Paul, Robert Ayers, Damontre Moore, Owamagbe Odighizuwa, George Selvie, Kerry Wynn (cut: Brad Bars). Pierre-Paul expects to be able to play at some point in September or early October, which means they can't put him on short-term injured reserve. And he's not eligible for PUP. So if he signs his franchise tender, they'll have to carry him on the 53, and he likely takes a spot away from some other position on defense. Bubble guys such as Markus Kuhn, Trevin Wade, Jayron Hosley and Jeromy Miles could be affected by this.

Defensive tackle (4): Johnathan Hankins, Cullen Jenkins, Jay Bromley, Kenrick Ellis (cut: Dominique Hamilton, Markus Kuhn). Jenkins' ability to play end could allow the Giants to carry Kuhn here or an extra player in the secondary, but only if they cut one of the ends, and I don't see who it would be.

Linebacker (6): Jon Beason, Devon Kennard, J.T. Thomas, Jameel McClain, Jonathan Casillas, Mark Herzlich. (cut: Uani Unga, Cole Farrand). Six feels like a lot, but Herzlich and Casillas play on special teams and McClain is too valuable as oft-injured Beason's backup.

Cornerback (5): Prince Amukamara, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Trumaine McBride, Mike Harris, Jayron Hosley (injured: Chykie Brown) (cut: Trevin Wade, Chandler Fenner, C.J. Conway) Hosley is on the bubble, and if he, Kuhn and Robinson all get cut, that drops the number of total picks from the 2008-12 drafts still on the roster to four.

Safety (4): Landon Collins, Brandon Meriweather, Cooper Taylor, Stevie Brown. (injured: Nat Berhe, Jeromy Miles). Miles could make it over Brown depending on the severity of his injury. This group likely will remain vulnerable to further change after 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Kicker (1): Josh Brown. (cut: Chris Boswell). If Brown's hamstring doesn't heal by the opener, they can always bring back Boswell or someone else.

Punter (1): Steve Weatherford. Though he hasn't had the best preseason. His back has been bothering him more in games than in practices because games require him to keep it loose for a longer period of time. It's not out of the question they could look outside to replace him, though it's still more likely they don't.

Long-snapper (1): Zak DeOssie. As there must always be a Stark in Winterfell, there must always be a DeOssie on the Giants.
