Giants TE Larry Donnell misses practice with Achilles injury

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell missed Monday's organized team activities practice due to tendinitis in his left Achilles' tendon. Donnell rode the exercise bike at the beginning of practice and wore a walking boot on his left foot for the rest of practice and in the locker room afterward.

Donnell said he had a partial tear of the Achilles while in college, but that it hadn't bothered him again until "about a month ago." He did not seem especially worried about it costing him time, pointing out that he did practice last week and has been able to run and do most of what he needs to be doing this time of year.

"Just trying to keep it as still as possible," Donnell said, adding that he's been wearing the boot since Friday. "Just taking it day-by-day, nothing serious. Just taking care of it right now so when I do go out there, I can go full-speed."

In Donnell's absence, Jerome Cunningham stepped in with the first team and had a nice day catching the ball from Eli Manning.

In other Giants' injury/participation news...

  • As mentioned in an earlier post, star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. sat out the team portion of practice with a hamstring injury. Beckham's hamstrings are worthy of their own posts. Preston Parker got a fair bit of work in Beckham's spot, but Marcus Harris, Corey Washington and Dwayne Harris saw action as well.

  • Wide receiver Victor Cruz continues his rehab from the knee injury that cost him the final 10 games of 2014. Cruz's activity was a bit limited Wednesday because the team's practice was moved indoors due to the rain, and there's only one field in the indoor facility. Last week, Cruz ran routes on a field separate from the one on which his teammates stretched.

  • Defensive end Robert Ayers continues to miss practice due to the sprained ankle he suffered in last Wednesday's practice. In Ayers' absence, George Selvie has been logging first-team snaps at defensive end, with Cullen Jenkins and Kerry Wynn rotating in with him.

  • Safety Nat Berhe continues to sit out with a calf injury, and Cooper Taylor has taken his place for now with the first team -- assuming Berhe would be running with the first team alongside rookie Landon Collins if healthy. The Giants still have a lot to sort out at safety, and would like to get Berhe on the field to help them do that sorting.

  • Linebacker Devon Kennard was back at practice after missing some time last week with an ankle injury.

  • Linebacker Jon Beason missed practice because his flight was canceled due to the weather. Jameel McClain filled in at middle linebacker, as he did last year when Beason was injured.
