As some teams shift focus to draft, a reminder: No No. 1 for Patriots

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The New England Patriots are in full playoff mode, as they will host a divisional round playoff game in two weeks, so it's a bit early to get into the type of draft talk that 20 other franchises are transitioning toward this week.

The Patriots were stripped of their first-round draft choice as part of the NFL's Deflategate penalty, which leaves them the following selections:

  • Second-round pick

  • Third-round pick

  • Fourth-round pick

  • Seventh-round pick, from Houston (Ryan Mallett trade)

  • Seventh-round pick

The team traded its fifth-round pick to Houston for receiver Keshawn Martin and a sixth-round pick. Then that sixth-round pick was traded to Chicago for linebacker Jon Bostic. The seventh-round selection dealt to Detroit for tight end Michael Williams was a 2017 pick.

Meanwhile, the club's picks total should increase when compensatory selections are awarded, as one projection has them getting a third-rounder for cornerback Darrelle Revis, a fifth-rounder for defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, a sixth-rounder for running back Shane Vereen and a seventh-rounder for defensive end Akeem Ayers.

The Patriots have had successful drafts when they haven't had a first-round pick, such as 2013, when they traded out and selected linebacker Jamie Collins 52nd overall. Bill Belichick later said the team probably would have selected Collins in the first round if they hadn't moved down.

So while they'd obviously prefer to have the first-round pick, they'll hope for a similar scenario this year.
