MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings likely needed to come out of free agency with two offensive tackles. They now have them after adding former Carolina Panthers tackle Mike Remmers on Friday. Remmers, who was with the Vikings at the end of the 2013 season, was released by the team just before the start of Mike Zimmer's first season in 2014. Now, Remmers is back in Minnesota.
Terms: Five years, $30 million
ESPN 150 ranking: No. 63
Grade: B. Remmers likely isn't going to be an elite tackle for the Vikings -- he struggled in pass protection at times when he moved to the left side of the Panthers' line in place of Michael Oher last season, and Von Miller beat him for two strip sacks in Super Bowl 50. But the Vikings were looking for proven linemen, and the presence of Remmers means they won't go into the season counting on T.J. Clemmings to play one of their tackle spots.
What it means: Riley Reiff figures to be the left tackle now, after finalizing his deal with the Vikings on Friday, and Remmers will likely be the right tackle. The Vikings could go into the season with Reiff at left tackle, Alex Boone at left guard, Joe Berger at center, Jeremiah Sirles at right guard and Remmers at right tackle. It probably wouldn't be the best line in the league, but even if the Vikings are simply able to open enough space for a competent running game and protect quarterback Sam Bradford, there's probably enough other talent for this team to contend for a playoff spot.
What's the risk: Remmers has been cut six times in his career -- including once by the Vikings -- and though the structure of his contract will tell the tale of how much job security he has, it's probably safe to assume the Vikings will be moving forward with Reiff and Remmers as their bookend tackles for the next few years. But Remmers' contract at least gives Minnesota time to solidify its line.
