KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With the Kansas City Chiefs nearing the end zone late in Sunday night's game against the Denver Broncos, Dontari Poe knew what he needed to do, which was act like an offensive player.

"I was in coach (Andy) Reid's ear, like a true offensive player would be," Poe said. "I was kind of egging coach Reid on to call it. The fans started cheering for me and he listened, so we got it done."

What Poe, the 346-pound nose tackle, got done was throw a touchdown pass. With the Chiefs at the Denver 2 and less than two minutes remaining, Poe lined up as the quarterback in the shotgun formation.

He took a step as if to run, but pulled up short of the line, jumped and lofted a pass to tight end Demetrius Harris in the end zone for the final score of the Chiefs' 33-10 win.

The play completed a hat trick of sorts for Poe, who caught a touchdown pass on a screen play earlier this season against the Raiders. He scored on a run last year against the Chargers.

Those plays delight Chiefs fans. The first two touchdowns for Poe came when the Chiefs were on the road.

They also delight his teammates, who like to see the big man go to work with the ball.

"(When) he scores, it's like we score," said defensive lineman Chris Jones, presumably speaking for all defensive players. "I keep telling Alex (Smith) we are coming for his position."

Smith, the Chiefs' quarterback, has nothing to worry about given Poe's form on his touchdown pass. Poe looked more like he was shooting a basketball than throwing a football.

But Smith wasn't going to be critical of Poe, not with him having a perfect record as a passer.

"He's 1-for-1 with a touchdown," Smith said. "I don't think I can critique much. I can't say anything. It looked good to me."
