We will continue here a position-by-position look at how the Kansas City Chiefs are utilizing their salary-cap space with the wide receivers. ESPN Stats and Information showed the Chiefs to have about $2.9 million in available cap space, which is 30th among the NFL’s 32 teams.
Salary-cap commitments: $7,638,333. Jeremy Maclin (pictured) $3,400,000, Jason Avant $665,000, Junior Hemingway $585,000, Da'Rick Rogers $585,000, Albert Wilson $513,333, Armon Binns $510,000, Frankie Hammond Jr. $510,000, Corbin Louks $435,000, Fred Williams $435,000. Note: Only the 51 highest figures currently count against the Chiefs’ salary cap, according to NFL rules, so some of these salaries might not figure into the team’s current cap number.
Percent of Chiefs’ total salary cap: 11.1.
NFL average salary-cap spending on wide receivers: $13,944,817.
Chiefs’ rank in wide receiver spending: 31st among 32 teams.
Analysis: Don’t be surprised that the Chiefs are so low on the wide receiver pay list even after signing Maclin to a $55 million contract. The big hits against the salary cap don’t begin until next year, when the Chiefs jump to 11th in receiver spending. Otherwise, the receivers on this list are either getting minimum money or something close to it. This doesn’t account for De'Anthony Thomas, who we’ve listed as a running back. It also doesn’t account for the almost $9 million in dead money the Chiefs are carrying for the recently released Dwayne Bowe.
