JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's investigation into the actions of police officers who responded to a single-car accident involving Jacksonville Jaguars player Denard Robinson is still ongoing, but the sheriff’s office on Wednesday released traffic camera footage that shows the moments before Robinson drove his car into a retention pond on July 3.
The footage shows Robinson’s Chevy Impala slowly driving through an intersection on the wrong side of the road shortly after 4 a.m. In one angle, the car moves out of camera range. In another angle, the car can be seen slowly moving down the road until the footage becomes too grainy.
Neither angle shows the car entering the retention pond.
Robinson was issued a citation for careless driving last week but sheriff Mike Williams wants to know what led to the responding officers' decision not to cite Robinson at the time of the crash. An officer evaluated Robinson at the scene and determined he was not impaired.
"I think they decided a ticket should have been written," police spokesman Christian Hancock said. "It [the citation] was last week, but as far as the investigation into the officers, that is still ongoing."
Robinson was found asleep at the wheel of his car while it was slowly sinking into the pond. The 25-year-old Robinson and his passenger, 29-year-old Marissa O. Staples, were unhurt. However, police officers had to tell Robinson multiple times that the car was in the pond and convince him to leave, according to the police report.
According to the report, officer M.T. Borgert screened Robinson for impairment and determined that Robinson was not impaired and should not be charged with driving under the influence. In addition, it was written on the police report that alcohol and drug tests were given.
