INDIANAPOLIS -- All Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson saw was a hole open up when he took the handoff on their first offensive series of the second quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend.

A hole opening up for Richardson is big news when you take into consideration the struggles he’s had this season.

But everything changed when Richardson tried to switch hands with the ball. The ball went to the ground and the Chiefs recovered it.

That put an end to Richardson’s night with carrying the ball and added to what’s been a tough first season with the Colts.

“I messed up and I kicked myself in the butt all night about it,” Richardson said. “I even argued with my brother just because I was mad. And nobody even made me fumble. Trying to make the play, trying to do something extra and make the play. The hole was there. I thought I made the cut and I was going to be up out of there. I think I got too excited.”

Richardson didn’t have any more carries and he wasn’t part of the passing game in his first playoff game. That’s not how anybody envisioned things, especially Richardson.

That was Richardson’s third fumble -- two were recovered by the defense -- of the season.

The Colts, with the help of quarterback Andrew Luck, rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries against the Chiefs.

“No, I haven’t lost any confidence in Trent at all,” Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said. “As a matter of fact, we’re counting on Trent and Donald [Brown] and even Tashard [Choice] because we only have a few backs to be ready to go out and play. We know that they’ll play well.”
