Ryan Tannehill's contract extension doesn't impact Andrew Luck

INDIANAPOLIS -- Miami’s Ryan Tannehill became the first quarterback from the 2012 draft class to get a contract extension when the Dolphins signed him Monday to a deal worth $96 million, including $45 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

So, of course, some have wondered what Tannehill’s deal means for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

There’s no comparison. Luck and Seattle’s Russell Wilson, the top two quarterbacks from the 2012 draft class, are in a different bracket than Tannehill.

Wilson has played in back-to-back Super Bowls. Luck has won 11 games in each of his first three seasons while taking a step further in the playoffs in each of those three seasons.

Tannehill is 23-25 in his career, but the Dolphins like his upside, according to NFL Nation Dolphins reporter James Walker.

Wilson likely will be the next quarterback from that draft class to get an extension. That’s because Colts owner Jim Irsay said during the owners meetings in March that they likely won’t get a deal done with their franchise quarterback until after the 2015 season. The Colts already have picked up Luck’s fifth-year option.

“I really think most likely the scenario is going into the offseason next year is when that second contract will come up,” Irsay said at the time. “That’s the vision I have right now.”

You can expect Luck to become the highest-paid quarterback -- and possibly the highest-paid player -- in the NFL once he gets his new contract.

New Orleans' Drew Brees and Eli Manning of the New York Giants will have the highest base salaries among quarterbacks next season at $18.75 million and $17 million, respectively.
