Not too fat, not too skinny: Packers' Eddie Lacy still might not be just right

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky reviews Eddie Lacy's first day at organized team activities, where the running back showed off a slimmer physique but still has a lot of work to do. (1:11)

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Photos seem to do funny things to Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy. Remember his rookie training camp, when an unflattering picture made him look larger than he did in real life?

The camera appeared to add 10 or 20 pounds.

After seeing Lacy at organized team activities on Tuesday, it’s hard not to wonder if the camera had the opposite effect this offseason, when we saw photos of him looking slimmer than ever. There’s no doubt that Lacy has lost weight, but depending on your expectations he might not be as svelte as you thought -- or hoped.

The reality rests somewhere in the middle.

Sure, Lacy looked lighter in the midsection, and he sounded pleased with the results he’s gotten from his work with P90X founder Tony Horton. But Lacy is still a 240-pound-plus running back who has -- and probably needs -- some beef behind him.

“I’m not going to get skinny like James Starks,” Lacy said of his teammate. “I’m always going to be big.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers may have put it best when he said, “Eddie looks like Eddie.”

Listening to coach Mike McCarthy and Lacy’s new position coach, Ben Sirmans, it sounds as if Lacy’s weight-loss program is not a finished product but rather a work in progress. The team no doubt would like to put its own stamp on Lacy’s conditioning that’s geared more toward football than what he did in his workouts with Horton this offseason.

It’s also possible that Lacy has gotten heavier since he returned to Green Bay for the start of the offseason program on April 18, when he showed up about 18 pounds lighter than when he left in January.

“I think he’s light enough from the standpoint of where they tell me he was at this point last year,” Sirmans said. “He’s definitely a smaller man than he was at this point last year. So it leads me to believe that by the time we get to training camp, from a fitness standpoint, he’ll be where we want him to be.”

And that’s regardless of what the pictures show.
