PRO BOWL ALTERNATES
Sam Martin, P, first alternate: He's had one of the best punting seasons in league history, averaging 48.41 yard per punt and 43.87 net yards per punt. Those are both career-bests for the fourth-year pro out of Appalachian State. He, along with his coverage unit, are averaging only 6.38 yards per return, and he estimates he's had less than a handful of bad punts all season.
Matt Prater, K, first alternate: He continues to be one of the more accurate kickers in the league and one of the most clutch kickers ever. He's never missed a game-tying or game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter or overtime in his career and is 30-of-33 on field goals this season. While he's tied for seventh in field-goal percentage, he's also made all six of his attempts from 50 yards or better this season.
Matthew Stafford, QB, second alternate: Stafford has put together one of the best seasons of his career and is an MVP candidate. He has completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,720 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has a career-best 71.7 QBR and also a passer rating of 95.8 -- third-highest of his career. His eight fourth-quarter comeback wins are the most of any quarterback in a single season in NFL history.
Darius Slay, CB, second alternate: He doesn't have the big numbers, but he's one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. His two interceptions are low -- he'll tell you that -- but he's also thrown at less often than the other defensive backs on his team. He has the speed to run with any receiver and often draws an opponent's top outside receiver matchup.
SNUBS
Andre Roberts, returner: After a rough start to the season, Roberts has been one of the better return men in the NFC. He's third in the league in yards per punt return (11.74) and averages a punt return for a touchdown every 9.5 returns. He's the only player in the league with two punt returns for touchdowns this year. He is ninth in kick return average (21.82 yards).
Glover Quin, S: He's the unquestioned leader of the Lions defense and one of the only true free safeties in the NFL. His roaming role has kept the Lions from allowing many big plays. His numbers aren't massive -- 48 tackles, a forced fumble and two interceptions -- but his play has been consistently good.
