Thursday last chance for Corbin Louks, others to make impression

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- As the preseason draws to a close and the Denver Broncos' regular-season opener approaches, the team has answered a smattering of questions that trailed them into training camp.

They have made decisions in the offensive line, including signing two-time Pro Bowl selection Evan Mathis to a 1-year, incentive-heavy deal last week. They have settled on a pecking order at running back with Ronnie Hillman having earned the No. 2 spot behind C.J. Anderson.

And they have made their picks at kicker and punter -- Brandon McManus and Britton Colquitt -- and avoided keeping a third kicker to handle kickoffs since McManus will handle those duties. But a little over a week out from the opener -- Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens -- and the Broncos are still on the hunt for returners. Especially a punt returner.

As a result, one of the Broncos’ latest arrivals at camp -- wide receiver Corbin Louks -- still have a shot at making something happen. Louks will be one of the players who gets a long look in the return game in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

Louks and Isaiah Burse are expected to get plenty of work as the team's returners in the game. While Burse spent the 2014 season with the Broncos, mostly on the team’s practice squad, Louks didn’t arrive until early August when he was signed after wide receiver Kyle Williams went to injured reserve.

“I'm really excited for Thursday," Louks said. “It's another opportunity to go out, try to prove your worth and get a shot at getting a spot on the team ... There is always pressure. That's just part of being in the NFL. I just try to approach every day the same way, to stay focused on that day, not look too far ahead and let the rest take care of itself when it comes."

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has repeatedly said he’d rather not use a roster spot on a returner that is a specialist, that he’d like the team’s kickoff returner and punt returner contribute someplace else on the roster.

Safety Omar Bolden is the most likely kickoff returner, and the Broncos have tried him as a punt returner at times. The team’s other candidates at either return spot -- such as Emmanuel Sanders, Burse, Jordan Norwood and Louks -- all reside at receiver.

And this week Kubiak said that fact might influence how many receivers the team keeps when the roster goes to 53 players.

“It's huge," Kubiak said. “We could be a five-, six-, seven-receiver football team depending on how things play out here over the weekend. It's very big."

For Louks, whose only preseason catch to this point is a 26-yard touchdown reception from Trevor Siemian and whose road less traveled in includes an NFL practice squad, the Arena League, the FXFL developmental league and time as a quarterback, safety and wide receiver in two college stops (Utah and Nevada), Thursday is a chance to present himself as an option to fill a job or two the Broncos need filled.

Kubiak said that Thursday isn’t too late for a player to make one final impression.

“Hopefully we've got about three or four guys that play in a way that make us say, 'You know what? I'm not sure this is right’," Kubiak said. “Obviously, you've formed an opinion up to this point, and I know every year it seems like you come out of this game changing your mind about a couple players. It's up to them."

“It's exciting," Louks said. “It's a challenge and I'm excited to get the opportunity. This is my fourth year out (of college) and this is the first preseason that I've actually gotten a chance to show what I can do. I'm very thankful to the Broncos for giving me that opportunity and I'm just going to do my best and try to take advantage of it."
