BEREA, Ohio -- It figures.
The New York Jets announced Monday that quarterback Geno Smith tore a knee ligament in Sunday's win over the Ravens and will be out for the rest of the season.
Which means that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start when the Jets play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
A week ago, ESPN analytics gave the Browns a 43.8 percent chance to win their first game against the Jets. Now the Browns face the quarterback who has won 80 percent of his starts against them.
Fitzpatrick's track record against the Browns ranks among the best the Browns have faced.
He has won four in a row when facing the Browns, including last season's opener.
He also has the same won-lost record against the Browns that Tom Brady has -- 4-1. Only two quarterbacks have better won-lost percentages (minimum five games) against Cleveland's NFL team: Ben Roethlisberger at 19-2 and Joe Flacco at 14-1.
The last time a Fitzpatrick-quarterbacked team lost to the Browns was 2008. He has since played against and defeated the Browns in 2008 (second game for the Bengals), 2010 (for Buffalo), 2012 (for Buffalo) and 2015 (for the Jets).
A year ago, Fitzpatrick completed 15-of-24 for 179 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
In the four wins since 2008, he's gone 56-for-91 for 584 yards with seven touchdowns and an interception. His rating in those games: 101.1.
He will face a Browns defense that the last three weeks has given up 501, 407 and 559 yards and that Sunday gave up 271 yards rushing, nine yards per carry.
That's not all.
He will face a Browns defense that is giving up 30 points and 425.5 yards per game.
In theory, if a struggling quarterback is going to find himself, it would be against a defense that is struggling, as well. At this point, to say the Browns are struggling defensively is akin to saying that water is wet.
The Browns had nothing to do with Smith starting or getting hurt against Baltimore.
But to see him go out with an injury and see the starter who has handled them well return to the lineup ... yes ... that's just so Browns.
