A.J. Green, Geno Atkins only Bengals to make Pro Bowl in down year

SELECTIONS

A.J. Green, wide receiver, sixth Pro Bowl selection: It was a foregone conclusion that Green would make another Pro Bowl, despite missing almost five full games with a hamstring injury. Green still has 964 yards and four touchdowns in a shortened season, and was unquestionably the best player on his team. Green is very deserving of another Pro Bowl vote and was meriting consideration as the best wide receiver in the league prior to his injury.

Geno Atkins, defensive tackle, fifth Pro Bowl selection: Atkins didn't quite reach the highs he did last season when he had double-digit sacks. However, with 7.5 sacks, 23 quarterback hits and 12 tackles for loss, Atkins still is one of the best interior linemen in the league, and it would be hard to say who should have gone ahead of him.

SNUBS

Vontaze Burfict, linebacker: Burfict's reputation as a dirty player was always going to make him a long shot to make another Pro Bowl because he needed both fans and players to vote for him. That was a hard sell after he was suspended for three games for violations of player safety, and also had an incident where the NFL fined him this season for allegedly stomping on another player's leg. However, Burfict was playing as well as anyone at the end of the season.

Andrew Whitworth, left tackle: A two-time Pro Bowler, Whitworth is somewhat of a surprise snub, as he's been the best player on a leaky offensive line this season. Whitworth is still as solid as ever at 34. But the Bengals' losing record and shaky offensive line play as a unit likely led to him being overlooked. Whitworth is the first alternate, so he still has a good shot to make it in the game.

Carlos Dunlap, defensive end: Dunlap wasn't necessarily snubbed as the second alternate, but he did merit some consideration with seven sacks, 15 pass deflections and 47 total tackles. Dunlap, who made his first Pro Bowl last year, likely didn't make his second one for lack of consistency from game to game.
