Bills cut Moorman, trim to 62 players

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Cutting longtime punter Brian Moorman was among 13 roster moves made by the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

Moorman, 38, rejoined the Bills last October after he spent the first 12 seasons (2001-12) of his career in Buffalo. He holds several of the team's career punting records.

This preseason, Moorman averaged 37.4 net yards on 16 punts, including five that were downed inside the 20-yard line. He competed against Harvard product Jake Dombrowski in training camp before Dombrowski was released earlier this week.

The Bills later claimed punter/kicker Jordan Gay off waivers from the Carolina Panthers. Gay punted once in Thursday's preseason finale loss to the Detroit Lions.

"We don’t feel that he’s ready (to punt)," Marrone said of Gay after the game. "We got him out there and looked at him on a punt tonight. That’s how we felt prior to today that he’s not ready to do the punting stuff, but really had an unbelievably strong leg. We could get him for kickoffs and he’s somebody we could work with."

Gay is the only punter on the Bills' roster.

Meanwhile, the Bills released nine other players Friday, including quarterback Jordan Palmer. Signed earlier this week, Palmer posted a 10.4 quarterback rating in three quarters of playing time Thursday.

Also released were defensive tackle Landon Cohen, fullback Evan Rodriguez, tight end Dominique Jones, linebacker Xavius Boyd, cornerback Kamaal McIlwain, cornerback Sam Miller, center Jared Wheeler, and wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt.

The Bills placed tight end Tony Moeaki (hamstring), cornerback Bobby Felder (groin) and cornerback Mario Butler (ankle) on injured reserve.

Their roster now stands at 62 players. The team must further trim to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday.
