The New York Rangers are trading Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey to the Colorado Avalanche for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan and a second- and a fourth-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL draft.
The Rangers are retaining 50% of Lindgren's $4.5 million cap hit as part of the deal. The defenseman's contract expires this summer. They will receive the better second-round pick of Carolina's or the Rangers' and the better of Colorado's or Vancouver's in the fourth round.
New York, which entered Saturday outside of playoff position, still believes it can make the playoffs and wanted to bring in players to help down the stretch.
Parssinen, 24, is a player New York has eyed for a while -- and tried to trade for previously while he was with the Nashville Predators, sources said. De Haan is experienced, with 676 career NHL games, and is expected to jump into the defensive rotation right away. Adam Fox is on injured reserve with an upper body injury, though the Rangers expect him back for their stretch run.
It was difficult for the Rangers to say goodbye to Lindgren, whom they viewed as a heart-and-soul player who gave everything while playing his entire seven-year career with New York. However, the Rangers were unlikely to re-sign him this summer and felt they needed to recoup compensation.
The Avalanche, meanwhile, are loading up for a playoff run after making a difficult decision to trade Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. The second-round pick involved in Saturday's trade came via the Rantanen deal.
