LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Catcher Matt Thaiss of the New York Yankees kicked off the last day of the 2012 Area Code Baseball Games with a two-run double in the first inning in a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
He also showed his defensive skills when he nailed a runner at second to end the bottom of the third.
Thaiss, who is committed to Virginia, is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior-to-be from Jackson Memorial (Jackson, N.J.), where he hit .343 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs this spring to earn All-Conference first-team and All-State second-team honors.
