New Balance Player of the Day: Aug. 9

New Balance Baseball

LONG BEACH, Calif. –- Jacob Gatewood, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound junior-to-be from Clovis, Calif., continued the power surge at the 2012 Area Code Games, hitting a three-run blast over the left field fence estimated to have gone 400 feet.

The home run was the seventh in the first 15 games and helped the Oakland A’s tie the New York Yankees, 4-4.

The ball was still rising when it cleared the fence and the only question was if it would stay fair, which it did by about 10 feet.

“It was a high inside fastball and it felt really good coming off the bat,” Gatewood said after the game.

The USC commit also singled and walked. He played in center field in the game, but he will line up at shortstop next season for Clovis High where he hit .348 with eight home runs this spring.

A Class of 2014 standout, Gatewood is one of about a dozen underclassmen at this year’s Games.
