2023 MLB Mock Draft 3.1: Kiley McDaniel's final predictions

ESPN

The 2023 MLB draft begins at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, and that means it is time for one final update as teams lock in their Day 1 plans.

Since this is a last-minute look at what teams could do Sunday night, my writeups here are limited to the top 15 picks and focused on what has changed since the previous edition. You can find a more detailed look at each team's strategy in my Mock Draft 3.0. And remember, this is the order in which I think the picks will come off the board, while my rankings (linked below) are the order in which I'd pick the players.

Draft coverage: Mock Draft 2.0 | Top 300 | Guide for all 30 teams

Watch MLB draft: Sunday, July 9 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN

1. Pittsburgh Pirates

Wyatt Langford, LF, Florida

The Pirates' decision won't be made until the last minute, but I'm about 66% sure that it will be Langford.

2. Washington Nationals

Paul Skenes, RHP, LSU

If Langford goes No. 1, Skenes landing here is the heavy favorite -- with Crews the only other real option for the Nationals.

3. Detroit Tigers

Dylan Crews, CF, LSU

It's believed that Crews' high asking price will land him at this pick or possibly the fourth pick. Clark is a stealth option for the Tigers at a lower price point.

4. Texas Rangers

Max Clark, CF, Franklin Community (Indiana) HS

This seems to be the absolute floor for the three elite college guys, but Texas' choice likely comes down to Clark or Jenkins. I'm near 50/50 on which one it'll be, but there's a little more Clark buzz right now.

5. Minnesota Twins

Jacob Gonzalez, SS, Ole Miss

The Twins are open to going over or under slot and could take either Clark or Jenkins here, but I think taking Gonzalez for some savings they could use in the comp round is the most likely outcome.

6. Oakland Athletics

Walker Jenkins, RF, South Brunswick (North Carolina) HS

I think the A's will take whichever of Clark or Jenkins gets here, with Dollander and Jacob Wilson as the other options if neither does.

7. Cincinnati Reds

Kyle Teel, C, Virginia

I think this is down to Teel, Lowder and Dollander. I believe in that order. Ralphy Velazquez, Charlee Soto, Aidan Miller, and Arjun Nimmala are all potential targets for the Reds later.

8. Kansas City Royals

Brayden Taylor, 3B, TCU

I think this will end up being Taylor or Teel, with lots of upside preps targeted later, such as Blake Mitchell, Arjun Nimmala, Noble Meyer, etc.

9. Colorado Rockies

Chase Dollander, RHP, Tennessee

This had long been thought to be Lowder and maybe Enrique Bradfield, but now Dollander has late momentum.

10. Miami Marlins

Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

This is where things really open up, with maybe a half-dozen real candidates still in play as I write this. This would also be a place we could see an underslot pick here to set up Miami going overslot at their next pick.

11. Los Angeles Angels

Rhett Lowder, RHP, Wake Forest

I think Lowder and Schanuel land in this area with the potential quick-to-the-majors college players jumping in front of the second cut of prep bats.

12. Arizona Diamondbacks

Nolan Schanuel, 1B, Florida Atlantic

The Diamondbacks seem to be leaning college here, but still seems pretty open.

13. Chicago Cubs

Matt Shaw, 2B, Maryland

Aidan Miller and Arjun Nimmala are among the prep names getting buzz here, but I think many of the second cut of prep guys will slide a bit, and the Cubs go college here.

14. Boston Red Sox

Aidan Miller, 3B, Mitchell (Florida) HS

I think the Red Sox are also open to any player demographic but could go with a high school bat as Miller has some late buzz here.

15. Chicago White Sox

Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami

Morales has long been coveted by the White Sox, and with Dollander off the board, I think he'll be the pick, and Chicago will gamble that some prep players of their liking make it to later picks.

16. San Francisco Giants

Enrique Bradfield Jr., CF, Vanderbilt

17. Baltimore Orioles

George Lombard Jr., SS, Gulliver Prep (Florida) HS

18. Milwaukee Brewers

Hurston Waldrep, RHP, Florida

19. Tampa Bay Rays

Colin Houck, 3B, Parkview (Georgia) HS

20. Toronto Blue Jays

Tommy Troy, 3B, Stanford

21. St. Louis Cardinals

Chase Davis, RF, Arizona

22. Seattle Mariners

Noble Meyer, RHP, Jesuit (Oregon) HS

23. Cleveland Guardians

Colt Emerson, SS, Glenn (Ohio) HS

24. Atlanta Braves

Ty Floyd, RHP, LSU

25. San Diego Padres

Bryce Eldridge, 1B/RHP, Madison (Virginia) HS

26. New York Yankees

Sammy Stafura, SS, Walter Panas (New York) HS

27. Philadelphia Phillies

Jonny Farmelo, CF, VA HS

28. Houston Astros

Walker Martin, SS, Eaton (Colorado) HS

Prospect Promotion Incentive Picks

29. Seattle Mariners: Brock Wilken, 3B, Wake Forest

Competitive Balance Round A

30. Seattle Mariners: Tai Peete, SS, Trinity Christian (Georgia) HS

31. Tampa Bay Rays: Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest (Florida) HS

32. New York Mets: Brice Matthews, SS, Nebraska

33. Milwaukee Brewers: Trent Caraway, SS, JSerra Catholic (California) HS

34. Minnesota Twins: Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (Massachusetts) HS

35. Miami Marlins: Blake Mitchell, C, Sinton (Texas) HS

36. Los Angeles Dodgers: Kemp Alderman, RF, Ole Miss

37. Detroit Tigers: Dillon Head, CF, Homewood Flossmoor (Illinois) HS

38. Cincinnati Reds: Ralphy Velazquez, C, Huntington Beach (California) HS

39. Oakland Athletics: Jake Gelof, 3B, Virginia

I won't bother to try to guess the full second round as it's getting very speculative at this point, especially with so many picks contingent on how the first round plays out and which teams have some extra money heading here.
