Nationally (and SEC)
The Florida Gators had a major need at quarterback in the Class of 2014, and Will Muschamp and staff more than filled it, signing two of the nation’s top signal-callers. Third-ranked dual-threat prospect Will Grier (Davidson, N.C./Davidson Day School) is already on campus and preparing for spring practice, while No. 7 dual-threat prospect Treon Harris (Miami/Booker T. Washington) was a huge signing-day flip from Florida State. Both prospects are great athletes who are accustomed to operating uptempo offenses. This should also help newly hired offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, who will install a similar scheme in Gainesville.
The Gators had the nation's best QB class; here's which schools had the best in each of the remaining power conferences:
ACC
Syracuse is going to an open, uptempo offense next season, and on national signing day, the Orange signed a pair of quarterbacks who could be near-perfect fits. Four-star recruits Alin Edouard (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) and A.J. Long (Lebanon, Tenn./Friendship Christian) both fit the bill as athletically skilled, dual-threat prospects who can play fast and spin the ball.
Big 12
The TCU Horned Frogs signed two of the Lone Star State’s top 2014 QBs in four-star Foster Sawyer (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) and three-star Grayson Muehlstein (Decatur, Texas/Decatur). While the question remains about what TCU’s newly revamped scheme will look like under new coaches Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie, both Sawyer and Muehlstein have great size with the desired arm strength and playmaking ability.
Big Ten
While Penn State has one of the nation’s top young quarterbacks returning in Christian Hackenberg, the Nittany Lions needed to look to the long-term future and build depth at the position in this class. James Franklin certainly did that with his initial class in Happy Valley. No. 6 pocket passer Michael O’Connor (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) has already enrolled, and will quickly begin his development process. His size, ball placement and upside make him a near ideal fit in Penn State’s pro-style scheme. Three-star athlete Trace McSorley (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) is a second possible signal-caller in the class.
Pac-12
Not only did the Arizona Wildcats sign a top-25 class in 2014, but did so while addressing several needs. Arizona signed a pair of quarterbacks in the class in four-star Brandon Dawkins (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) and three-star junior college prospect Jerrard Randall (Hollywood, Fla./Northeast Mississippi Community College), with both being dual threats who fit Rich Rodriguez’s scheme. Randall, a former LSU recruit, is already on campus and is expected to challenge for the starting spot in the spring with a skill set that features a very strong arm and well-above-average athleticism for the position.
