With just a few days remaining until the 2021 MLB draft (Sunday, 7 p.m. ET on ESPN), it's time for my final ranking of the top prospects in this year's class.
Who are the big risers, which players are seeing their stock fall and who are some other players who could sneak into the top five rounds of this year's draft?
And remember, these are my personal rankings, not the order in which I think players will come off the board -- we'll update that in Mock Draft 3.0 running later this week. Now on to the top 200.
Note: We've partnered with ProPitchAI by sending them clips of the 17 pitchers I have slow-mo, side angle video for that project in the top two rounds. They broke them down for various metrics measuring how their deliveries work and I picked out three of them to embed below and reference where these pitchers rank in various metrics among the sample of 17 elite pitchers.
1. Jordan Lawlar, SS, Jesuit HS (TX) (Vanderbilt commit)
Among the four elite prep shortstops, Lawlar doesn't have the highest floor or highest upside and you could truly put them in any order, but I think he's the best combination of skills, hit tool and track record. All of his tools rate as a 55 or 60 on the 20-80 scouting scale, where 50 is average. There are shades of Carlos Correa in parts of his game, while his opposite field swing kinda looks like Derek Jeter, but I think all four of these shortstops ultimately will have careers just a bit south of those two.
2. Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA) (USC commit)
Mayer is a scout's dream, as a projectable 6-foot-3 shortstop with a sweet lefty cut and a track record of hitting. The only real concern is that you have to project him growing into big plus tools because they are around average right now -- but every marker is there for improvement.
3. Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt
If you're reading this, you probably are familiar, but he's basically the best version of a Walker Buehler starter kit, with the main concern being that his command needs to continue to improve in pro ball. He could be in the big leagues in 12 months if everything goes to plan.
I'll explain these metrics more in tomorrow's rankings finale, but here's something we'll be using in the draft broadcast and in print: ProPlayAI's delivery breakdowns. Here's Jack Leiter: pic.twitter.com/kvEypU0xv2
— Kiley McDaniel (@kileymcd) July 7, 2021
As you may guess, Leiter is high in the arm speed rankings, at third behind the two guys on the list that top 100 mph often in Chase Petty and Ryan Cusick. He's also narrowly second in hip-shoulder separation, which is a proxy for flexibility, and efficiency. These two metrics help explain the twitchiness to Leiter's game that help him make power, attacking approach work.
4. Henry Davis, C, Louisville
The best college hitter by a good margin, with enough hit tool, a plus approach and easy plus power. He can play any corner spot capably and in the current game he would have to, but with his 70-or-80-grade arm he may be playable when robot umps are part of the sport. He's a more complete version of Kyle Schwarber, but less of a pure hitter.
5. Kahlil Watson, SS, Wake Forest HS (NC) (N.C. State commit)
Explosive in the batter's box with a chance to be a plus hitter who has 20-30 homer power in the Jose Ramirez type area, but he is also the biggest risk of this year's four elite prep shortstops to slide off of the position.
6. Brady House, SS, Winder Barrow HS (GA) (Tennessee commit)
The highest upside position player in the draft also comes with some hit-tool-risk tied to his mechanics and power-focused cut, but he has 30-40 homer upside as a shortstop with Dwight Howard's shoulders, so there's plenty to like.
7. Jackson Jobe, RHP, Heritage Hall HS (OK) (Ole Miss commit)
Might be the best prep pitching prospect in years, with three 65-to-70-grade pitches and the feel and delivery you'd want to see if you're dipping into the highest risk demographic in the draft.
8. Kumar Rocker, RHP, Vanderbilt
If you're reading this article, you already know him. Rocker has been probably unfairly picked apart since he shoved down the stretch as a freshman, but now is looking more like a No. 3 starter than an ace.
9. Will Taylor, CF, Dutch Fork HS (SC) (Clemson commit)
Taylor is an elite multisport athlete. He's a state champ as a quarterback and wrestler, and committed to Clemson to play QB, slot receiver and center field. A 70 runner with 55 raw power and a strong track record of hitting is a pretty ridiculous resume.
10. Benny Montgomery, CF, Red Land HS (PA) (Virginia commit)
He's a big, tooled-up talent with All-Star upside, but also a funky swing with some elements like Hunter Pence.
11. Sal Frelick, CF, Boston College
An explosive multi-sport sparkplug, Frelick is a 70 runner and 60 defender in center, can probably also play second base if needed and has a compact swing that produces.
12. Colton Cowser, CF, Sam Houston State
He is a steady mid-major center fielder who can hit and stick at the position, with power emerging this spring, but the questions are about how much impact he'll have and the level of competition.
13. Colson Montgomery, SS, Southridge HS (IN) (Indiana commit)
Some teams don't like that he'll already be 19 on draft day and will likely slide over to third base down the line, but he has plus raw power, performs in games, was a D1 point guard prospect before he turned his focus solely to baseball, and kinda looks like Corey Seager as a player if you squint.
14. Harry Ford, C, North Cobb HS (GA) (Georgia Tech commit)
Built like a powerlifter who teaches yoga, Ford is a standout backstop who has tinkered a little too much with his swing but is explosive enough that he could also play center field.
15. Matt McLain, SS, UCLA
A first-rounder out of high school who hasn't progressed as much as you'd want at UCLA, but is still potentially above average across the board as a likely second-base fit.
16. Tyler Black, 2B, Wright State
My pick to click is a late-blooming, mid-major, Canadian second baseman with a spotless track record and power potential. Get on the bandwagon while you still can.
17. Will Bednar, RHP, Mississippi State
Got a late start to the spring due to a neck issue, then kept gaining steam all spring before shoving in Omaha; 65-grade slider is the separator here.
18. Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian HS (FL) (Florida commit)
Basically everything Painter (great name for a pitcher) does grades as a 55 or 60, and the frame, delivery and feel all check out. You only pause because prep righties are all terrifying.
19. Ty Madden, RHP, Texas
Madden is a big, strong Texas righty who is up to 99 mph with a plus slider, but the third pitch and bat-missing qualities of his fastball make him more of a project than you'd like out of the college ranks.
20. Gunnar Hoglund, RHP, Ole Miss
Locked to go in the top 10 picks (above-average stuff, plus command, great performance) until undergoing Tommy John surgery this spring, but still likely goes by the 20th pick.
21. Frank Mozzicato, LHP, East Catholic HS (CT) (UConn commit)
One of the wildest late-rising prospects in recent memory, Mozz sits around 89-91 and has been up to 94. Some scouts hang a 65 or 70 grade on his curveball and love his feel and approach to pitching.
22. Jordan Wicks, LHP, Kansas State
Steady college lefty with an average fastball/slider, but above-average command and a ridiculous plus-plus changeup along with standout makeup.
23. Bubba Chandler, RHP/SS, North Oconee HS (GA) (Clemson commit)
Is committed to be a pitcher, shortstop and quarterback at Clemson but is expected to turn pro. Some teams see him best as a switch-hitting infielder with plus power potential; others see a potential mid-rotation starter who has been up to 97 mph.
24. Cooper Kinney, 3B, Baylor HS (TN) (South Carolina commit)
Arguably the best prep hitter in the class comes with solid-average raw power and probably fits at second or third base, but you're buying the bat.
25. Jay Allen, CF, John Carroll Catholic HS (FL) (Florida commit)
Accomplished prep QB has chosen baseball and offers above-average tools and strong performance.
26. Max Muncy, SS, Thousand Oaks HS (CA) (Arkansas commit)
Not related to the other SoCal Muncy who plays for the Dodgers, this Max has above-average tools across the board on one of the most loaded prep teams in the country.
27. Trey Sweeney, SS, Eastern Illinois
Late-rising small school shortstop has a big leg kick and gaudy numbers, chance for above-average production at the most valuable position on the field.
28. Jud Fabian, CF, Florida
He has 65-grade raw power and fits in center field, but started the year with a historic rate of whiffs that has scared off a number of teams.
29. Sam Bachman, RHP, Miami Ohio
Second-best raw stuff in the class (behind Jackson Jobe), hitting 101 mph and a slider that some call a 70-grade pitch. Scouts worry about some indicators of relief risk but rave about his makeup.
30. Tyler Whitaker, RF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV) (Arizona commit)
Whitaker is 6-foot-5 with easy plus raw and hit a number of tape-measure shots this spring, but his lever length makes you wonder how much contact he'll make at higher levels.
31. Ryan Cusick, RHP, Wake Forest
He is a big, strong righty who was regularly in triple digits this spring and has a 55-to-60-grade hook, but there isn't a third pitch, and his command is below average.
32. Connor Norby, 2B, East Carolina
One of the strongest hit tools in the college class, but has average-ish power, a shorter mid-major track record and is limited to second base. Numbers-approach teams like him the most.
33. Gavin Williams, RHP, East Carolina
Williams is a 22-year-old flamethrower who has been up to 100 mph. He was undrafted last year, but really took to starting, with three potential plus pitches (fastball, curve, slider) and solid performance -- but he's older and has a short starting track record.
34. Josh Hartle, LHP, Reagan HS (NC) (Wake Forest commit)
Big, lanky lefty throws mostly 88-91 mph sinkers from a low slot while scouts love the projection, feel and competitiveness.
North Carolina prep lefty (Wake Forest commit) Josh Hartle pic.twitter.com/JpCrrP2EDb
— Kiley McDaniel (@kileymcd) July 7, 2021
His standout abilities per ProPlayAI are fourth-best arm speed in the sample (behind flamethrowers Ryan Cusick, Chase Petty, and Jack Leiter), second-longest stride in the sample (as a percentage of height), and is above average at three other measures as well. The arm speed maps well to his velocity (and sharpness of his breaking stuff) improving, and the stride helps it get on the hitter faster and come in flatter to the plate, which usually helps induce more whiffs.
35. Anthony Solometo, LHP, Bishop Eustace Prep HS (NJ) (North Carolina commit)
Big lefty competes and has been as high as 98 mph from a funky long arm action, pitches with more 55-grade stuff.
36. Michael McGreevy, RHP, UC Santa Barbara
Rare projection college arm that checks all of the arm action, delivery and feel boxes, but mostly works 90-93 mph and throws a lot of his 55-to-60-grade breaker.
37. Joe Mack, C, Williamsville East HS (NY) (Clemson commit)
Mack had an uneven spring, but for a couple summers, he has shown a solid glove and bat, with standout lefty plus power as a separator.
38. Carson Williams, SS, Torrey Pines HS (CA) (Cal commit)
Will start in pro ball as a shortstop that's young for the class, has good feel for contact, and a steady glove, but comes with a backup plan of a mid-90's heater from an easy delivery.
39. Lonnie White Jr., CF, Malvern Prep HS (PA) (Penn State commit)
A Penn State football commit as a wide receiver, White has plus power and has had a strong summer -- but this spring some scouts have wondered about his contact ability and if he fits better in right field.
40. Adrian Del Castillo, C, Miami
Del Castillo had a rough spring and is a fringy defensive catcher, but the track record is there for a shot at a 55 bat, 50 power and acceptable catcher defense in the robo-ump future.
41. Peyton Wilson, 2B, Alabama
Wilson is a plus-plus runner with a plus arm and has a decent shot to convert to catcher. Productive spring and has bat control, but fringy power and swings too much.
42. Jackson Merrill, SS, Severna Park HS (MD) (Kentucky commit)
Merrill is a lefty-hitting shortstop with power that's helping him rocket up boards, but he wasn't heavily scouted until the last few months, so there's huge risk/reward.
43. Wes Kath, 3B, Desert Mountain HS (AZ) (Arizona State commit)
Easy lefty swing with easy plus raw power and a loud spring with lots of homers, but bat speed and defensive projection are more ordinary.
44. Ethan Wilson, LF, South Alabama
Plus power and strong performance but played in a mid-major conference, is limited to left field, and for those reasons has a bit of a split camp in the industry.
45. Jackson Baumeister, RHP, Bolles HS (FL) (Florida State commit)
Stands out to eyeball scouts for a huge extension, which greatly helps making his fastball more whiff-inducing. Also has above-average stuff and a frame similar to Jack Flaherty at the same stage.
Florida prep righty Jackson Baumeister (Florida State commit) pic.twitter.com/8uSM3DiobZ
— Kiley McDaniel (@kileymcd) July 7, 2021
His standout abilities per ProPlayAI are pure arm speed that's above average for the sample and higher than that of pitchers throwing a couple ticks harder. He also has almost the biggest stride length (as a percentage of height) in the sample (while also being among the tallest), the lowest torque (stress on the elbow) of anyone in the sample, and tops (over 50% more than average for the sample) scap retraction, or flexibility in his shoulder, which also correlates to higher velocity.
46. Spencer Schwellenbach, RHP/SS, Nebraska
Dynamic two-way talent is second or third round as a shortstop, late first to early second as a pitcher but has a tiny sample of innings.
47. Jaden Hill, RHP, LSU
A potential top-10 pick entering the spring, has a separator 70-grade changeup and tons of upside, but injury (had Tommy John this spring) and execution issues.
48. Peyton Stovall, 2B, Haughton HS (LA) (Arkansas commit)
One of the highest probability bats in the prep class, but it is his only above-average tool.
49. Ben Kudrna, RHP, Blue Valley Southwest HS (KS) (LSU commit)
Kudrna has one of the higher upside projection arms in the whole draft with a chance for a dominating fastball/slider combo.
50. Daylen Lile, RF, Trinity HS (KY) (Louisville commit)
One of the prettiest swings in the draft, with performance to match, but a bit of a tweener.
51. James Wood, RF, IMG Academy HS (FL) (Mississippi State commit)
52. Izaac Pacheco, 3B, Friendswood HS (TX) (Texas A&M commit)
53. Gage Jump, LHP, JSerra Catholic HS (CA) (UCLA commit)
