Strengths, weaknesses of every MLB farm system

What needs do the Cubs have in their farm system as they try to defend their title? AP Photo/Elise Amendola

With Major League Baseball's 2017 Rule 4 draft of the best available amateur talent from the United States (as well as U.S. territories and Puerto Rico) and Canada beginning Monday, June 12, each team will have different priorities. But what are they already working with within their farm systems, and what could they be looking to add as they start making their picks in the draft?

NL East

Atlanta Braves
First pick: No. 5 overall
Bonus pool: $9,881,200

System strength: Perhaps the best system in baseball, Atlanta's system has as much depth and potential star power as any organization. You can start with the young group of pitchers led by Mike Soroka and Kolby Allard, while OF Ronald Acuna is making a push to be the system's best position-player prospect now that Dansby Swanson has graduated.

System weakness: None? If you want to mother-in-law the system and find some fault somewhere, you can squint really hard and opine that maybe they try to get too cute in the draft and overplay their hand when simply taking the best player is the best course of action.

Recent top picks:
2016: Ian Anderson, RHP, No. 3
2015: Kolby Allard, LHP, No. 14
2014: Braxton Davidson, 1B, No. 32

Possible fits: Any of Hunter Greene, Kyle Wright, Brendan McKay or MacKenzie Gore if they fall to the fifth pick; high school SS/CF Royce Lewis, high school RHP Shane Baz.

Miami Marlins
First pick: No. 13 overall
Bonus pool: $6,445,900

System strength: There are several interesting athletes in the system, such as OF Thomas Jones, SS Samuel Castro and OF Albert Guaimaro.

System weakness: Overall, the system is not very good, mostly a result of a combination of trades and injuries.

Recent top picks:
2016: Braxton Garrett, LHP, No. 7
2015: Josh Naylor, 1B, No. 12
2014: Tyler Kolek, RHP, No. 2

Possible fits: High school LHP D.L. Hall, LHP David Peterson (Oregon), RHP J.B. Bukauskas (North Carolina).

New York Mets
First pick: No. 20 overall
Bonus pool: $6,212,500

System strength: The Mets have an excellent international scouting program that has netted them one of baseball's best prospects in Amed Rosario as well as Venezuelan teenager Andres Gimenez, who jumped all the way from the Dominican Summer League last year to full-season ball this year and is having success.

System weakness: The pitching pipeline, which has yielded several excellent rotation mainstays, is now relatively dry.

Recent top picks:
2016: Justin Dunn, RHP, No. 19
2015: Desmond Lindsay, OF, No. 53
2014: Michael Conforto, LF, No. 10

Possible fits: SS Logan Warmoth (North Carolina), juco RHP Nate Pearson.

Philadelphia Phillies
First pick: No. 8 overall
Bonus pool: $8,729,100

System strength: Latin American pitchers like Sixto Sanchez, Adonis Medina and Seranthony Dominguez have some of the best upside in the system.

System weakness: The Phillies haven't been able to close the deal on developing their players to finished products, as young big leaguers like Maikel Franco and several of the prospects at Triple-A are struggling.

Recent top picks:
2016: Mickey Moniak, OF, No. 1
2015: Cornelius Randolph, LF, No. 10
2014: Aaron Nola, RHP, No. 7

Possible fits: 1B Pavin Smith (Virginia), high school LHP Trevor Rogers, high school RHP Shane Baz.

Washington Nationals
First pick: No. 25 overall
Bonus pool: $5,503,500

System strength: The system has several above-average defenders, including polished CF Blake Perkins, speedy OF Andrew Stevenson and all-around star Victor Robles.

System weakness: It's hard to identify a surefire rotation piece with Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez both traded away, and Erick Fedde is struggling.

Recent top picks:
2016: Carter Kieboom, SS, No. 28
2015: Andrew Stevenson, CF, No. 58
2014: Erick Fedde, RHP, No. 18

Possible fits: RHP Tristan Beck (Stanford), high school OF Drew Waters.

NL Central

Chicago Cubs
First pick: No. 27 overall
Bonus pool: $2,454,900

System strength: It's starting to thin out as Chicago chases rings, but there's still an army of talented Latin American players at the lower levels led by SS Aramis Ademan and RHP Jose Albertos, and they still have arguably the best power-hitting prospect in baseball in Eloy Jimenez.

System weakness: Nothing glaring, but it is clearly at the mercy of the big-league club's competitive window.

Recent top picks:
2016: Thomas Hatch, RHP, No. 104
2015: Ian Happ, 2B, No. 9
2014: Kyle Schwarber, C, No. 4

Possible fits: High school RHP Michael Mercado, RHP Alex Lange (LSU), high school C M.J. Melendez.

Cincinnati Reds
First pick: No. 2 overall
Bonus pool: $13,658,400

System strength: The system is loaded with too much pitching for all of it to go the way of recent homegrown arms and land in the bullpen. Tyler Mahle has taken a huge step forward and Cuban righty Vlad Gutierrez is missing bats and throwing strikes in his first stateside season.

System weakness: But there sure are a lot of likely relievers in this system.

Recent top picks:
2016: Nick Senzel, 3B, No. 2
2015: Tyler Stephenson, C, No. 11
2014: Nick Howard, RHP, No. 19

Possible fits: High school RHP Hunter Greene, 1B/LHP Brendan McKay (Louisville).

Milwaukee Brewers
First pick: No. 9 overall
Bonus pool: $10,447,700

System strength: After several trades, Milwaukee's system is full of several up-the-middle positional players, like Lewis Brinson, Isan Diaz and Corey Ray, who also project to hit for power.

System weakness: Several of the system's pitching prospects have stalled in recent years, as Josh Hader is doing this season.

Recent top picks:
2016: Corey Ray, CF, No. 5
2015: Trent Clark, CF, No. 15
2014: Kodi Medeiros, LHP, No. 12

Possible fits: Toolsy outfielders (Austin Beck, Jo Adell and Jeren Kendall), high school RHP Shane Baz.

Pittsburgh Pirates
First pick: No. 12 overall
Bonus pool: $10,135,900

System strength: The system is full of big-velocity pitchers, and their arms usually have at least one potential plus secondary pitch.

System weakness: Save for RHP Mitch Keller, the prospects at the very top of the system are all off to slow starts.

Recent top picks:
2016: Will Craig, 1B, No. 22
2015: Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B, No. 19
2014: Cole Tucker, SS, No. 24

Possible fits: High school RHP Shane Baz, RHP Griffin Canning (UCLA), 3B Jake Burger (Missouri State).

St. Louis Cardinals
First pick: No. 94 overall
Bonus pool: $2,176,000

System strength: The Cardinals were aggressive in Latin America, specifically Cuba, and have several young, hard-throwing Latin American arms. Pitching, in general, is a system strength even after Alex Reyes' injury.

System weakness: The Cardinals don't pick until 94th overall because of the picks they forfeited due to the Astros hacking scandal.

Recent top picks:
2016: Delvin Perez, SS, No. 23
2015: Nick Plummer, OF, No. 23
2014: Luke Weaver, RHP, No. 27

Possible fits: 1B Chad Spanberger (Arkansas), RHP Tony Dibrell (Kennesaw State), LHP Charlie Barnes (Clemson).

NL West

Arizona Diamondbacks
First pick: No. 7 overall
Bonus pool: $9,905,900

System strength: Arizona entered the offseason with one of the most ill-perceived farm systems in baseball, but some prospects -- RHP Jon Duplantier and OF Marcus Wilson in particular -- are having breakout seasons and improving the way the entire organization looks.

System weakness: The system remains incredibly shallow with only a handful of prospects likely to make a big-league impact, and most of them are far from doing so.

Recent top picks:
2016: Anfernee Grier, CF, No. 39
2015: Dansby Swanson, SS, No. 1
2014: Touki Toussaint, RHP, No. 16

Possible fits: CF Adam Haseley (Virginia), high school SS Royce Lewis, LHP David Peterson (Oregon).

Colorado Rockies
First pick: No. 48 overall
Bonus pool: $4,615,700

System strength: Even independent of Coors Field, this system has several prospects with big-time raw power. Brendan Rodgers is the most famous of these, but Colton Welker is hitting well in Class A, and OF Pedro Gonzalez has a body that should grow into big power.

System weakness: Several of the recent pitchers Colorado has drafted have had injury issues, as Javier Medina needed Tommy John surgery and Robert Tyler and David Hill have had trouble getting off the ground this season.

Recent top picks:
2016: Riley Pint, RHP, No. 4
2015: Brendan Rodgers, SS, No. 3
2014: Kyle Freeland, LHP, No. 8

Possible fits: 1B Brent Rooker (Mississippi State), RHP Drew Rasmussen (Oregon State), a good-bodied high school pitcher.

Los Angeles Dodgers
First pick: No. 23 overall
Bonus pool: $5,764,200

System strength: Los Angeles has had several terrific drafts, netting talents befitting higher picks like the currently injured Mitch White, Walker Buehler, power-hitting CF D.J. Peters and positionless raker Willie Calhoun.

System weakness: Despite a record-setting spending spree in Latin America, few of the prospects signed -- especially the most expensive ones -- have entrenched themselves as excellent prospects. The best of them, RHP Yadier Alvarez, is off to a slow start in 2017.

Recent top picks:
2016: Gavin Lux, SS, No. 20
2015: Walker Buehler, RHP, No. 24
2014: Grant Holmes, RHP, No. 22

Possible fits: High school CF Bubba Thompson, 1B Evan White (Kentucky), an up-the-middle bat.

San Diego Padres
First pick: No. 3 overall
Bonus pool: $11,839,000

System strength: The system is very deep, even after graduating Manny Margot and Hunter Renfroe, with several potential teenage stars down at the complex level in Arizona.

System weakness: Several of the system's best pitching prospects, Anderson Espinoza, Adrian Morejon and Chris Paddack among them, have had to deal with injury issues.

Recent top picks:
2016: Cal Quantrill, RHP, No. 8
2015: Austin Smith, RHP, No. 51
2014: Trea Turner, SS, No. 13

Possible fits: High school LHP MacKenzie Gore, high school SS Royce Lewis, high school RHP Hunter Greene (should he fall to No. 3).

San Francisco Giants
First pick: No. 19 overall
Bonus pool: $6,363,600

System strength: The top of the system is made up, primarily, of college draftees.

System weakness: There's a lack of elite athleticism, especially after the club traded Lucius Fox to Tampa Bay last year.

Recent top picks:
2016: Bryan Reynolds, OF, No. 59
2015: Phil Bickford, RHP, No. 18
2014: Tyler Beede, RHP, No. 14

Possible fits: 1B Evan White (Kentucky), high school 1B Nick Pratto.

AL East

Baltimore Orioles
First pick: No. 21 overall
Bonus pool: $6,846,700

System strength: In general, the system is not good. However, a trio of outfield prospects -- last year's third-round pick Austin Hays, 2015 13th-rounder Cedric Mullins and 2015 first-rounder Ryan Mountcastle (although he doesn't project to stay at shortstop) are all having exceptional seasons and looking more like part of Baltimore's future.

System weakness: The Orioles spend virtually no money on the international market, and that doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. They have a growing track record of trading away their international-bonus-pool slots.

Recent top picks:
2016: Cody Sedlock, RHP, No. 27
2015: D.J. Stewart, OF, No. 25
2014: Brian Gonzalez, LHP, No. 90

Possible fits: College pitching, high school RHP Matt Sauer.

Boston Red Sox
First pick: No. 24 overall
Bonus pool: $5,667,100

System strength: Even after Andrew Benintendi's graduation to the majors and the offseason trades that sent Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech packing, this system has potential star power at the top in 3B Rafael Devers and injured-but-gifted lefty Jason Groome, last year's 12th overall pick. There are also a couple of young Latin American prospects at the lower levels, such as lanky righty Bryan Mata and speedy CF Lorenzo Cedrola, who look like promising long-term projects.

System weakness: Despite upticks in performance from some of the system's fringe prospects so far this year, it remains a rather shallow system without a middle class to bridge the gap between the potential stars at the top of prospect lists and the very young ones who require lots of time and projection.

Recent top picks:
2016: Jason Groome, LHP, No. 12
2015: Andrew Benintendi, OF, No. 7
2014: Michael Chavis, SS, No. 26

Possible fits: High school RHP Sam Carlson, SS Logan Warmoth (North Carolina), LHP Seth Romero (Houston).

New York Yankees
First pick: No. 16 overall
Bonus pool: $6,912,800

System strength: It's one of the best systems in baseball, perhaps the best, but New York is especially adept at coaxing more velocity from fringe pitching prospects and turning them into potential impact arms. Chance Adams and Jordan Montgomery are the most obvious examples of this.

System weakness: It's nit-picky, but several of the expensive Latin American signees who were part of New York's huge 2014 July 2 class have been slow to have on-field success.

Recent top picks:
2016: Blake Rutherford, OF, No. 18
2015: James Kaprielian, RHP, No. 16
2014: Jacob Lindgren, LHP, No. 55

Possible fits: High school LHP Trevor Rogers, high school 1B Nick Pratto, RHP Griffin Canning (UCLA).

Tampa Bay Rays
First pick: No. 4 overall
Bonus pool: $12,528,100

System strength: Tampa Bay's system is deep and well-rounded, with several promising pitchers at the upper levels, most of whom rely heavily on a changeup/splitter variant rather than a breaking ball. There is a lot of arm strength in this system, perhaps because the Rays have been quick to incorporate weighted-ball training into their pitchers' development programs.

System weakness: This club has understandably acquired high-risk/high-reward prospects who, if they pan out, have the kind of star potential the Rays can't afford on the open market. Several of them are struggling in low-A right now.

Recent top picks:
2016: Josh Lowe, CF, No. 13
2015: Garrett Whitley, CF, No. 20
2014: Casey Gillaspie, 1B, No. 20

Possible fits: 1B/LHP Brendan McKay (Louisville), RHP Kyle Wright (Vanderbilt), high school LHP MacKenzie Gore.

Toronto Blue Jays
First pick: No. 22 overall
Bonus pool: $8,231,000

System strength: The system is full of potential rotation pieces, though none of them are likely to be front-of-the-rotation arms. It also has a potential star in Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette is certainly hitting like one in low-A right now.

System weakness: Toronto has had issues developing the college hitters they've taken in early rounds as Max Pentecost has missed time with injury and Josh Palacios and J.B. Woodman are having trouble hitting in Lansing.

Recent top picks:
2016: T.J. Zeuch, RHP, No. 21
2015: Jon Harris, RHP, No. 29
2014: Jeff Hoffman, RHP, No. 9

Possible fits: RHP Tanner Houck (Missouri), high school SS Mark Vientos, CF Stuart Fairchild (Wake Forest).

AL Central

Chicago White Sox
First pick: No. 11 overall
Bonus pool: $7,921,400

System strength: After the winter purge of big leaguers, the farm system is loaded with potential stars -- Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech among them. Last year's gutsy selection of enigmatic RHP Alec Hansen looks prescient.

System weakness: For a while it had been a lack of successful, young, Latin American talent, but the signing of Luis Robert and early buzz on 2016 July 2 signee Luis Mieses have changed that a bit. Other than those two, all of the outfield prospects in the system project as bench pieces rather than everyday players.

Recent top picks:
2016: Zack Collins, C, No. 10
2015: Carson Fulmer, RHP, No. 8
2014: Carlos Rodon, LHP, No. 3

Possible fits: CF Jeren Kendall (Vanderbilt), the Virginia hitters, LHP David Peterson (Oregon).

Cleveland Indians
First pick: No. 64 overall
Bonus pool: $3,829,000

System strength: Cleveland has several potential big-league rotation pieces who get by without huge stuff and a few potential up-the-middle position players led by C Francisco Mejia and CF Bradley Zimmer.

System weakness: It lacks depth, in part because Cleveland has traded prospects away during its current competitive window.

Recent top picks:
2016: Will Benson, OF, No. 14
2015: Brady Aiken, LHP, No. 17
2014: Bradley Zimmer, OF, No. 21

Possible fits: High school RHP Joe Perez, 1B Brent Rooker (Mississippi State), a high school pitcher who falls for signability reasons.

Detroit Tigers
First pick: No. 18 overall
Bonus pool: $6,520,200

System strength: Pitching. Kyle Funkhouser is resurgent, as is Beau Burrows, and long-term project Matt Manning has a cathedral-height ceiling.

System weakness: The system lacks premium athletes, especially at up-the-middle positions.

Recent top picks:
2015: Matt Manning, RHP, No. 9
2015: Beau Burrows, RHP, No. 22
2014: Derek Hill, CF, No. 23

Possible fits: A hard-throwing RHP, high school OF Drew Waters.

Kansas City Royals
First pick: No. 14 overall
Bonus pool: $8,076,900

System strength: The Royals' farm system is full of hard-throwing arms, the most electric of which are Josh Staumont and Janser Lara, who have both touched 100 mph.

System weakness: All of the potential everyday position players in the system, save for maybe 1B Ryan O'Hearn, are a great distance away from the majors.

Recent top picks:
2016: A.J. Puckett, RHP, No. 67
2015: Ashe Russell, RHP, No. 21
2014: Brandon Finnegan, LHP, No. 17

Possible fits: 3B Jake Burger (Missouri State), CF Jeren Kendall (Vanderbilt).

Minnesota Twins
First pick: No. 1 overall
Bonus pool: $14,156,400

System strength: Minnesota has plundered Australian talent and has the most impressive collection of players from Down Under. Aaron Whitefield, Lachlan Wells and the healthy Lewis Thorpe aren't potential stars, but all are possible big-league contributors from a place not typically associated with baseball prospects.

System weakness: The Twins have selected an abnormally high number of likely relievers in recent drafts and now have lots of prospects who throw in the mid-90s but don't project as starters. Jake Reed, Brusdar Graterol and Nick Burdi are all good arms, but can't start.

Recent top picks:
2016: Alex Kirilloff, OF, No. 15
2015: Tyler Jay, LHP, No. 6
2014: Nick Gordon, SS, No. 5

Possible fits: RHP Kyle Wright (Vanderbilt), 1B/LHP Brendan McKay (Louisville).

AL West

Houston Astros
First pick: No. 15 overall
Bonus pool: $9,039,600

System strength: To boost a generally terrific system, Houston was especially active in Latin America last year and has several young Cuban players of interest, including LHP Cionel Perez and 1B Yordan Alvarez.

System weakness: Only SS Miguelangel Sierra and CF Gilberto Celestino project as impact defenders up the middle.

Recent top picks:
2016: Forrest Whitley, RHP, No. 17
2015: Alex Bregman, SS, No. 2
2014: Brady Aiken, LHP, No. 1

Possible fits: High school RHP Shane Baz, 2B Keston Hiura (UC Irvine).

Los Angeles Angels
First pick: No. 10 overall
Bonus pool: $8,212,800

System strength: In one of baseball's worst systems, at least RHP Chris Rodriguez is set to break out this summer.

System weakness: Both their '15 and '16 first round picks, Taylor Ward and Matt Thaiss, have had trouble getting off the ground.

Recent top picks:
2016: Matt Thaiss, 1B, No. 16
2015: Taylor Ward, C, No. 26
2014: Sean Newcomb, LHP, No. 15

Possible fits: High school OF Jo Adell, RHP Griffin Canning (UCLA), LHP David Peterson (Oregon).

Oakland Athletics
First pick: No. 6 overall
Bonus pool: $11,407,500

System strength: After a pitcher-heavy draft last year, arms like A.J. Puk, Daulton Jefferies and Heath Fillmyer make up an enviable group of pitchers atop Oakland's system. They were also active in Latin America last year, and young middle infielders Marcos Brito and Yerdel Vargas have been impressive during their brief stateside appearances.

System weakness: Other than the high-risk young prospects from last year's July 2 class, this system has few potential everyday position players.

Recent top picks:
2016: A.J. Puk, LHP, No. 6
2015: Richie Martin, SS, No. 20
2014: Matt Chapman, 3B, No. 25

Possible fits: High school OF Austin Beck, high school SS/CF Royce Lewis, the UVA hitters.

Seattle Mariners
First pick: No. 17 overall
Bonus pool: $7,136,000

System strength: Nick Neidert and Kyle Lewis are great prospects.

System weakness: This system is way down after 2016's purge that sent several high-profile names packing as well as multiple young pitchers that scouts who had AZL coverage were fond of. The club has used a lot of picks on righty power hitters who haven't panned out.

Recent top picks:
2015: Kyle Lewis, OF, No. 11
2015: Nick Neidert, RHP, No. 60
2014: Alex Jackson, C/RF, No. 6

Possible fits: 3B Jake Burger (Missouri State, a falling college arm, high school 1B Nick Pratto.

Texas Rangers
First pick: No. 26 overall
Bonus pool: $7,626,600

System strength: Latin American talent reigns throughout every level of the system, with Leody Taveras possessing the most upside and Yohander Mendez and Ronald Guzman likely to play sizable roles in the near future.

System weakness: They've had trouble keeping pitchers healthy. Breakout prospect Joe Palumbo is on the shelf due to Tommy John, Brett Martin has already had a back issue this year, and Mike Matuella missed all of last year with yet another injury. Dillon Tate's stuff was down before they traded him.

Recent top picks:
2016: Cole Ragans, LHP, No. 30
2015: Dillon Tate, RHP, No. 4
2014: Luis Ortiz, RHP, No. 30

Possible fits: High school 3B Mark Vientos, high school RHP Blayne Enlow, high school CF Heliot Ramos.
