Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson battled headaches on Sunday. The team wanted to protect him, and the ballyhooed rookie ended up playing in only 11 snaps in the team's win over the Buccaneers. Robinson carried the football one time, gaining three yards, scoring only 0.3 PPR points more than we did. Fantasy managers wound up with headaches with the lack of notice that Robinson was ailing, but who are we kidding, they would have left him active anyway. Football players fall ill, just like you and I do. It happens.
The overlooked problem here is that Robinson, the No. 8 pick in the NFL draft and a top-5 choice in preseason ESPN average live drafts, was only somewhat living up to the overwhelming hype before Week 7. A case can be made for the positive and negative, really. Early on, Robinson looked great. He rushed for more than 100 yards in two of the first four games, and he caught five passes per outing. What a talent! Sure, he shared touches with Tyler Allgeier, but few seemed to care. The first-round fantasy pick was worth it.
Then again,
None of this means fantasy managers should be panicking about the Texas product, who enters Week 8 averaging 13.6 PPR points per game (hey, Week 7 counts too, you know), but asking fantasy managers to avoid panicking is like asking babies to behave in restaurants. There are 16 running backs averaging more points per game, including the Browns' Jerome Ford. The Rams' Darrell Henderson Jr. came off the street and scored 13.6 PPR points just this past week. No, 13.6 PPR points is not a terrible number but ... again, expectations. This was supposed to be a top-5 RB, not a mid-RB2.
There is clearly little danger of Robinson falling off rosters anytime soon, but we may need to entertain the possibility he belongs on the proverbial Hot Seat for fantasy purposes as someone we shouldn't assume is a must-play every week. This seems ridiculous, right? Bijan Robinson was supposed to be awesome, with size and speed and the skills to play all downs. The problem is the Falcons are really into sharing. They haven't given him the football enough. Allgeier is not a pass-catcher. Patterson is. Why are they involved? When will the Falcons raise Robinson's volume? What if they don't?
The Falcons travel to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans this week. ESPN Fantasy confidently projects Robinson for 16.25 PPR points, 10th among running backs, nestled between the Giants' Saquon Barkley and the Raiders' Josh Jacobs. That's good, solid company. We should expect big things from Robinson, even though he has topped 13 PPR points in only one of his past five games. We can twist the facts however we want. Robinson may be great. The numbers say he hasn't quite been great. What happens in Week 8 and beyond? You're not going to sit Robinson this week, perhaps anytime soon, but if three Falcons running backs all get double-digit touches this week, then we may panic.
Quarterbacks on the Hot Seat
Packers starter Jordan Love is tied for 10th among quarterbacks in PPR points per game. Then again, numbers can deceive, because Love, averaging 17.6 PPR points this season, has only 20.28 points over the past two games. He has six interceptions the past three weeks. He's trending in the wrong direction as he faces the Vikings in Week 8.
Somewhat similarly, Denver's Russell Wilson averages 16.7 points per game, but has 20.7 points the past two games, including a delightful 6.9-point effort against the Chiefs two weeks ago. The Broncos host the Chiefs this week. Wilson and Love are the most dropped healthy QBs in ESPN leagues after the Cardinals' Joshua Dobbs.
We don't wish anyone to lose their starting jobs, but the Commanders' Sam Howell and Falcons' Desmond Ridder aren't wowing anyone, and their veteran backups (Jacoby Brissett, Taylor Heinicke) may be better fits. All QBs matter in SuperFlex formats.
Giants QB Daniel Jones has sat out two games with a neck injury, and backup Tyrod Taylor averaged 16 PPR points in two games, nearly winning both of them. Jones averages 11 PPR points per game. There is no QB controversy here - just look at the paychecks -- but if Jones faces the Jets this week, his investors may wish he had taken more time to heal.
Running backs on the Hot Seat
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, the final day of October (and it's Halloween!), and the Giants' Barkley, Titans' Derrick Henry and other big-name running backs may be on the move. It seems unlikely, though. This seems like a wise time to research the trade deadline for your fantasy leagues. In ESPN standard, it is November 29.
Vikings starter Alexander Mattison comes off scoring 6.2 PPR points against the 49ers, but hey, it's the 49ers. Mattison is averaging only 10.9 PPR points per game. We're already at the point managers view him as a flex option, at best. There are no NFL teams on bye this week.
Mattison faces the Packers. What can we do about Aaron Jones? He certainly boasts a longer track record of success than Mattison. Jones saw only 11 touches in his return to play in Week 7, scoring 8.7 PPR points. Jones was supposed to be a borderline RB1.
The Saints' Jamaal Williams returned to the field in Week 7, though few may have noticed since he scored 1.4 PPR points. We've got peak Alvin Kamara right now, so Williams seems forgotten. Fantasy managers are moving on.
Miles Sanders drags his disappointing 8.8 PPR points per game against the Texans this week, but surely Chuba Hubbard is in play for touches, too. A shoulder injury cost Sanders the Week 6 game. He last rushed for more than 50 yards in Week 1.
Wide receivers on the Hot Seat
Philadelphia Eagles starter DeVonta Smith continues to fade as colleague A.J. Brown makes history. Brown has surpassed 125 receiving yards in five consecutive games. Smith has reached 50 receiving yards in one game during that streak. You don't have to just blindly leave him active this week.
Denver's Jerry Jeudy should be on the real-life trade market, as the Broncos aren't winning games, and he has disappointed. Jeudy remains rostered in 80% of ESPN leagues, though perhaps not for long.
We're starting to see the Packers wide receivers show up on the most dropped list, for good reason. The quarterback is struggling. Christian Watson hurt his knee late in the Week 7 game.
Is anyone still relying on Patriots wide receivers not named Kendrick Bourne? He has 35.6 PPR points over the past two games. None of the other Patriots WRs have that many PPR points all season (DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster included).
Bears TE Cole Kmet thrilled us all with his pair of touchdowns and 27.6 PPR points in Week 4, and he scored a touchdown in Week 5. Ove the past two games, he has 2.9 PPR points. It's a problem.
