Here are the key updates from January 15, Monday:
1000th PKL match: Bengal Warriors beat Bengaluru Bulls 35-29
Bengal Warriors defender Shubham Shinde continued his astounding season with seven raid points as he helped his side win the 1000th game in PKL history, as they beat Bengaluru Bulls 35-29.
The two sides' star raiders - Maninder Singh and Bharat Hooda - came to the party as well, scoring nine and ten points respectively, but the Bulls couldn't deal with Shubham at the right corner, and that was the deciding factor in this contest.
In the other PKL match on Monday, Jaipur Pink Panthers made it three wins in a row at home, as they pipped U Mumbau 31-29. Guess who starred in their win? That man Arjun Deshwal again. His 11 points reaffirmed his dominance as the best raider in the league at the moment, as Jaipur went to the top of the PKL standings, albeit having played a game more than Puneri Paltan.
Super Cup: Jamshedpur end Blasters' trophy hopes
Jamshedpur FC beat Kerala Blasters 3-2 in a thrilling game at the Kalinga Stadium, eliminating Ivan Vukomanovic's side from the competition. Dimitrios Diamantakos and Daniel Chima Chukwu scored twice each as a see-saw battle saw the lead change hands a couple of times. Jeremy Manzorro delivered the telling blow from the spot, as Jamshedpur guaranteed top spot in Group B, by making two wins in two under Khalid Jamil.
Either NorthEast or the Blasters could reach six points and be level with Jamshedpur in the final round of games, but Khalid Jamil's side will go through nonetheless, on account of superior H2H against both teams.
WFI to defy ministry again with AGM decisions set to be ratified at EC meeting
The drama in Indian wrestling is showing no signs of an end, as the newly elected (and subsequently suspended) WFI confirmed on Monday that it will go ahead with its Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 16.
PTI reported today that it is expected the members will ratify the decisions taken during the General Council meeting of the WFI on December 21, hours after the new office bearers were elected.
The WFI had announced that it will conduct Nationals in Pune from January 29-31, prompting the sports ministry to say that they had no authority yet to conduct the Senior National Championships and that any event they staged would not be sanctioned or recognised.
The newly-elected WFI has been suspended since December 24, with the union sports ministry citing gross violations of the national sports code and the WFI constitution itself.
