College football's early signing period brought plenty of surprises and news, as 269 ESPN 300 recruits signed their national letters of intent.
That leaves the February signing period with much less on the table for teams to move up in the rankings or add early impact playmakers. There are currently 14 ESPN 300 recruits who are uncommitted, including three five-stars, and 17 who are committed but unsigned.
Even though there won't be as much quantity and likely won't be as many surprises, there are still some big names set to make decisions. Some prospects will make their announcements on College Football Live's national signing day special on Wednesday (noon ET, ESPN2 and the ESPN App).
To get you caught up on how we got to this point and what's left, here is a primer for Wednesday's national signing day.
Class rankings
Texas A&M won the early signing period and is sitting atop the class rankings with three five-star commitments. The Aggies did have four five-stars, but linebacker Harold Perkins recently decommitted. He is still considering Texas A&M but just took a visit to LSU, and is also including Florida on his list.
The staff signed the No. 1 prospect overall in defensive tackle Walter Nolen, five-star defensive tackle Gabe Brownlow-Dindy and five-star receiver Evan Stewart.
Alabama is sitting at No. 2 in the rankings with three five-star commitments in offensive tackle Tyler Booker, receiver Shazz Preston and defensive end Jeremiah Alexander. The Crimson Tide have 20 ESPN 300 commitments, 17 of whom are ranked in the top 120 of the ESPN 300.
Georgia is sitting just behind Alabama at No. 3 in the class rankings with five-star athlete Malaki Starks and 15 total ESPN 300 commitments in the class. The Dawgs have 12 commitments from prospects ranked inside the top 10 at their respective positions, including No. 1 running back Branson Robinson, No. 5 dual-threat quarterback Gunner Stockton and Jaheim Singletary, the No. 3 corner.
Ohio State is the No. 4 team. The Buckeyes have two five-stars in the class through reclassification. Safety Sonny Styles was originally committed in the 2023 class but reclassified to 2022 and is now the highest-ranked commit in Ohio State's class at No. 14 overall.
Linebacker C.J. Hicks is just behind Styles at 16, and is one of 15 ESPN 300 commitments in the class for Ohio State. Of the 15 ESPN 300 commits, 10 are ranked in the top 150.
Behind Ohio State is Texas at No. 5. Steve Sarkisian currently has 16 ESPN 300 commits, with six ranked inside the top 150. The class is led by offensive tackles Kelvin Banks and Neto Umeozulu, safety Bryan Allen Jr. and defensive linemen Justice Finkley and Jaray Bledsoe.
The staff has loaded up on both lines with six offensive linemen, three ranked in the ESPN 300, and seven defensive linemen, four ranked in the ESPN 300.
Can Jackson State pull off another surprise?
In the December signing period, Deion Sanders and Jackson State were able to sign five-star corner Travis Hunter, who had been committed to Florida State.
It was the first time an FCS school had signed a five-star prospect since ESPN started its rankings in 2006, and was the biggest news of the early signing period. Sanders is not afraid to go after big recruits, and he's looking to make another splash in the February signing period as well.
Sanders tweeted at No. 6 prospect Shemar Stewart but then deleted the tweet in an accidental public acknowledgement that Sanders is interested in the five-star defensive end. There is also potential interest in Perkins from Jackson State's side, so Sanders could still have something up his sleeve this week.
Uncommitted prospects
As mentioned above, there are only 14 uncommitted ESPN 300 recruits. Most will be announcing a decision this week, so here is where each prospect is and what schools are still in the running.
LB Harold Perkins
ESPN 300 rank: 4
Perkins recently decommitted from Texas A&M after committing to the Aggies in early January. LSU, Florida and Texas A&M are still in the mix for Perkins, and he most recently took a visit to LSU. He is originally from Louisiana, so there are ties to the state, but he is currently living in Texas, and could want to stay close to his new home. Whether or not the interest from Jackson State is reciprocated enough will be shown when Perkins makes his final decision. LSU getting the final visit could end up being important, but either way, Perkins will announce his decision Wednesday.
DE Shemar Stewart
ESPN 300 rank: 6
Stewart has a final-three list of Georgia, Miami and Texas A&M and has said he wants to stick to that top three despite other schools, including Florida, trying to get in the mix. Similar to Perkins, we will see if the interest from Jackson State is reciprocated, but the thought has been that Miami and Texas A&M were the front-runners for quite some time. The Hurricanes don't have a defensive coordinator at the moment, which might make an impact, but he's from the Miami area and the new staff has made him a priority. Stewart will announce his decision Wednesday as well.
OL Devon Campbell
ESPN 300 rank: 9
Campbell is also announcing Wednesday, and has had a top two of Oklahoma and Texas for quite some time. The Longhorns have a little more stability in this situation given that Oklahoma just changed coaching staffs. Texas could be the front-runner and end up the pick, but the Sooners have put in the effort to try to win out.
OL Josh Conerly Jr.
ESPN 300 rank: 30
Conerly is not announcing a decision Wednesday and is planning to wait until March to commit. He has a top list of Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Washington.
S Jacoby Mathews
ESPN 300 rank: 51
Mathews is committing Wednesday and has been considering Florida, LSU and Texas A&M. He recently took a visit to LSU, and the Tigers could be in position to sign him. Florida has made a push, though, and the staff has done a nice job down the stretch.
DT Christen Miller
ESPN 300 rank: 139
Miller will announce his commitment on ESPN's broadcast Wednesday, and has a final list of Florida A&M, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State. He has been a priority for quite a few teams, but he is from Georgia and could end up staying close to home to play for the Dawgs.
RB TreVonte' Citizen
ESPN 300 rank: 144
Citizen is also announcing on ESPN's broadcast Wednesday, and has a top list of Auburn, Florida, LSU and Miami. Citizen is from Louisiana but recently took a visit to Miami last weekend, before signing day. The Hurricanes are pushing, but LSU might be tough to beat.
