Matchup: Jacksonville Jaguars at San Diego Chargers
Spread: Opened San Diego -2.5; now San Diego -3 (-120)
Total: Opened 48; now 47.5
PickCenter public consensus pick: 70 percent Jacksonville
Public perception: This has rarely been seen before, but the public is definitely getting on the Jaguars' bandwagon. The offense with Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns catching sprials from Blake Bortles is the main reason, and going toe-to-toe with the Packers in Week 1 certainly helps.
Wiseguys' view: The sharps are actually on the favored Chargers here as the line opened San Diego -2.5 and they pushed it to the key number of 3. The Chargers surprised a lot of people last week with the way they jumped all over the Chiefs. This line would certainly be over a field goal if WR Keenan Allen (knee) wasn't out.
Dave Tuley's take: I was glad I was on the Chargers +6.5 at the Chiefs, but didn't expect them to play that well (or to blow a big lead). I was also on the Jaguars +4.5 and cashed with them as well, so I like both these teams. I'm tempted to take Jacksonville if the line continues to climb, but I'm more confident in this being a high-scoring game. Both offenses looked sharp, and even with Allen out for San Diego, Philip Rivers has plenty of other weapons to contribute to a shootout.
The pick: Over 47* (lean to Jaguars +3)
Erin Rynning:
The heat continues to build on Chargers head coach Mike McCoy after blowing a 21-3 lead in their opener, losing to Kansas City. To his credit it's more an erosion of talent on this Chargers roster that is coinciding with the losing than poor coaching. Last season the defense allowed 6 yards per play, and allowing Alex Smith to pass for 363 yards last week wasn't a positive sign. Blake Bortles threw for 320 yards in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers and his multiple receiving weapons will present a problem for this Chargers defense. The Jaguars' defense hung tough last week holding Aaron Rodgers under 200 yards and the Packers' running game to less than 100 yards as well.
This is a much-improved defense and the Chargers suffered a crushing blow last week in losing Allen for the season. Look for the improved Jaguars to steal a victory against the still-declining Chargers.
Pick: Jaguars
Mike Clay: The Jaguars nearly pulled off a Week 1 home upset of a superior Packers squad, so we should expect them to handle their business in San Diego this week. The Chargers' offense is hurting after the loss of Allen, and Antonio Gates had a rough 2016 debut last week. Joey Bosa might make his Chargers debut, but it's hard to imagine him playing a major role or making a significant impact after missing most of the offseason. The Jaguars sport an above-average scoring offense and shouldn't have much trouble against an underwhelming defense. I like the Jaguars to win this one, so take the points and run.
Projected score: Jacksonville 25, San Diego 23
