Matchup: Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams
Spread: Opened Seattle -3.5; now Seattle -6.5
Total: Opened 39; now 38
PickCenter public consensus pick: 72 percent Seattle
Public perception: The Seahawks struggled to get past the Dolphins in their opener, but the public is solidly on them, partly because not many people are looking to back the Rams after their embarrassing 28-0 loss to the 49ers. The only people backing the Rams have to be thinking they'll be motivated in their first home game back in Los Angeles.
Wiseguys' view: This line opened Seattle -3.5 on Sunday before being taken off the board as the status of Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (ankle) was uncertain. When it was announced Thursday that he would probably start, books put the line back up at Seattle -6.5. Expect some sharps to buy back on the Rams if the line goes to 7.
Dave Tuley's take: I've done well betting on the Rams as home underdogs the past few years, even against the vaunted Seahawks, as the Rams are 4-0 ATS at home with three outright upsets over the past four years -- but those were, of course, in St. Louis and in the dome. We have no idea if they'll have a similar home-field advantage in the cavernous outdoor Los Angeles Coliseum. And if they play like they did at San Francisco, it won't matter. This looks like a low-scoring game, but the oddsmakers have set the total low so it's hard to pull the trigger.
The pick: Seattle -6.5 (lean to under 38)
Mike Clay: The Rams have had the Seahawks' number as of late, winning three of the past four meetings between the teams. Yes, it's the first regular-season game in Los Angeles in some time and, yes, the Rams should be highly motivated after an embarrassing season opener, but at the end of the day, one of these teams is very good on paper and the other is not. Concerns include Seattle's slow start last season and an underwhelming performance against Miami last week, but I'm projecting a comfortable win for the superior team.
Projected score: Seattle 24, Los Angeles 15
The pick: Seattle
