Terry Collins projects Asdrubal Cabrera ready for Opening Day

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets manager Terry Collins said Thursday that he expects shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to be healthy enough to be part of the team's Opening Day roster.

Cabrera suffered a strained patellar tendon in his left knee during a March 10 Grapefruit League game. Doctors originally recommended Cabrera remain idle for two full weeks. However, Cabrera already has advanced to riding a stationary bicycle. And Collins believes Cabrera can move forward to tossing a baseball and tracking pitches in a cage soon.

"Right now I think he'll be available," Collins said about the April 3 opener against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Cabrera said Opening Day "absolutely" is realistic.

"I feel much better," he said.
