Texas A&M has become a fixture in the top 15 of the class rankings since the move to the SEC and the hiring of Kevin Sumlin. If the start to the junior class is any indication, 2017 could be another big year on the trail for the Aggies. Thursday night, ESPN Junior 300 quarterback Tate Martell became the first commit for Texas A&M in the class of 2017, and one who has the ability to create quite a bit of momentum.
What he brings: The 5-foot-11, 188-pound Martell will bring the game and quarterbacking experience of a 21- or 22-year-old by the time he hits campus in College Station. A quality athlete with instincts at the position, the Bishop Gorman star possesses terrific balance, quick feet and reactions and a quick release with the arm strength to make all the required throws in the intermediate game. He displays supreme confidence at the position and a competitive fire that teammates rally around.
Significance of impact: Texas A&M is quickly becoming a national recruiting program at the quarterback position due in large part to the magical 2012 Heisman season of Johnny Manziel. After inking the nation's No. 1-ranked pocket passer and No. 35 overall Kyle Allen in the 2014 class, Kevin Sumlin and staff signed the nation's No. 1 dual-threat signal-caller and five-star Kyler Murray in February. While the 2016 class may go without a quarterback, reeling in the No. 2-ranked quarterback and No. 32 overall Martell in 2017 is another in an impressive run that gives the Aggies the top-ranked quarterback out of Arizona, Texas and Nevada since the 2014 class.
Strength of commitment: Martell’s verbal comes a month after visiting College Station unofficially with his father, which was his first campus visit. One of the rising stars in college football recruiting, A&M offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital was very influential in Martell’s decision to pick the Aggies, along with the offensive scheme fit and expected state of the depth chart upon his arrival in 2017.
Percent chance of the commit holding: 95 percent.
Biggest threat: Oregon. Had the Ducks come with an offer and rolled out the red carpet even if offering later than others, Martell may well be headed to Eugene. It’s unlikely anyone can unseat Texas A&M, barring coaching changes in College Station.
For those who fell short, who is next on their board? USC can withstand losing out on top quarterback targets due to inking ESPN 300 Sam Darnold in February and having ESPN 300 Matt Fink committed in 2016. ESPN Junior 300 No. 103 Tua Tagovailoa is a top target for Steve Sarkisian and his staff.
