Liberty shake off Ionescu, Jones injuries in rout of Mystics

NEW YORK -- The New York Liberty shook off its latest bite from the injury bug to beat the Washington Mystics 89-63 on Thursday night.

With Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones out for the game, Breanna Stewart, Emma Meesseman and Marine Johannes stepped up to lead the Liberty in a rout of the Mystics to solidify their hold on fifth place in the standings as the WNBA regular season enters the home stretch.

Ionescu injured a toe on her left foot at the end of practice on Wednesday, and Jones wasn't feeling well Thursday morning and was a late addition to the injury report.

New York was also missing Natasha Cloud (broken nose) and Nyara Sabally (knee), so only had eight healthy players at the start of the game.

"Welcome to the New York Liberty 2025," coach Sandy Brondello quipped before the game. "It's been crazy."

The Liberty just got star Stewart back on Monday after she missed 13 games with a bone bruise in her right knee. She was still on a minutes restriction and only played 24 minutes, but she scored 12 points and added 9 rebounds in her limited role.

Meesseman led the team with 15 Johannes scored 14 to keep the Liberty seven games back of the league-leading Minnesota Lynx.

First-year Washington coach Sydney Johnson learned that two of the Liberty's stars were out shortly before the game.

"They have a lot of people. We have major challenges in front of us," he said. "So it won't be Sabrina and JJ, but it'll be some others. I can guarantee you that."

New York is 10-0 when Ionescu, Jones and Stewart finish games. It is 13-15 when they don't.

The Liberty entered the game in the thick of the playoff race, sitting a half-game behind Phoenix for the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and home-court advantage in the first round.
