      John Sheridan ends with win as Fleetwood cruise past Walsall

      John Sheridan's reign at Fleetwood ended on a high with a well-deserved 2-0 win over Walsall.A draw with Bradford saw the Saddlers secure their League One status in midweek so with both sides safe from the drop, this game had a pre-season friendly feel in the basking Fylde coast sun.There was pride to play for, though, and the Fleetwood players stepped up to the plate to ensure Sheridan's spell ended with a victory.The ex-Oldham man took over from Uwe Rosler in February and has steered the team away from the bottom four to safety.But it was announced last month that Joey Barton would take on the head coach role in June. Strikers Ash Hunter and Paddy Madden secured the win.Hunter added another sublime strike to his scrap book as he took centre stage, whipping the ball from just outside the box into the top corner in the 31st minute.Madden was back to his poaching best, gobbling up Mark Gillespie's parry from a Kyle Dempsey strike that was just too hot to handle in the 45th minute.

        Walsall hold on for vital point to end relegation fears

        Walsall gained the point they needed to secure their Sky Bet League One status with a 1-1 draw at Bradford.The match was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of the 56 people who died in the Valley Parade fire in May 1985 and both captains laid wreaths.Walsall took the lead in the 22nd minute with a smart, opportunist goal. George Dobson won the ball in the Bradford penalty area and tried a left-foot shot. The ball appeared to be going wide of the far post, but Amadou Bakayoko dived forward to head it into the net.Bradford equalised on the stroke of half-time following a move involving the two players on-loan from Burton. Former England international Stephen Warnock, who is retiring at the end of the season, crossed from the left for the unmarked Matty Lund to score with a close-range header.Bradford came closest to grabbing a winner in an improved second-half performance. Winger Jordan Gibson fired just wide of the far post in the 56th minute after receiving a through pass from Shay McCartan just two minutes after coming on as substitute.Tim Dieng and Callum Guy had shots blocked and Charlie Wyke saw a header saved, but the nearest they came to scoring was in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Liam Roberts made a stunning save to keep out a superb 20-yard shot from McCartan. The ball came out to Tony McMahon but he fired over the crossbar.

          George Dobson's late goal moves Northampton closer to relegation

          George Dobson's stoppage-time winner all-but condemned Northampton to relegation - and left Walsall needing just a point to secure their own safety.Midfielder Dobson's late strike left Northampton - who were twice thwarted by the woodwork - doomed, barring a nine-goal victory over relegation rivals Oldham in their final game.Northampton were almost in front after just two minutes as Daniel Powell's low drive was superbly tipped onto the post by Walsall keeper Liam Roberts.Walsall defender Kory Roberts cleared Matt Crooks' cross-shot off the line in the 23rd minute and, five minutes into the second half, Crooks again went close, steering over Shay Facey's cross from eight yards.Northampton almost won it in freak fashion after 76 minutes as a Matt Grimes cross floated over Roberts, struck the post, hit the keeper and bounced onto the bar before being hacked clear.But Walsall came on strong towards the end and, after Nicky Devlin glanced a header wide, Dobson won it in stoppage time as he steered Amadou Bakayoko's pass into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

            Scunthorpe closing in on play-off spot

            Scunthorpe moved a step closer to a League One play-off spot after a slender 1-0 home win over relegation-threatened Walsall.Ryan Yates scored the game's only goal as the Iron recorded only a second win in 12 matches.Scunthorpe are now three points clear of seventh-placed Plymouth, who have a game in hand, while Walsall are just a point above the relegation zone. The visitors almost went ahead when Julien Ngoy tried his luck from distance in the opening exchanges but Matt Gilks was equal to it.Down the other end Scunthorpe dangerman Josh Morris saw a free-kick come back off a post.Luke Leahy brought a speculative save from Gilks after the restart whilst Funso Ojo came close for the hosts only to be denied by Liam Roberts.When it looked as though the game was heading for a stalemate, Scunthorpe stole victory in the 76th minute.Conor Townsend clipped the ball into the Walsall box and Yates was there to plant a header past Roberts.

              Wimbledon beat relegation rivals Walsall with stoppage-time penalty

              Dean Parrett's stoppage-time penalty capped a stunning comeback as Wimbledon fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at relegation rivals Walsall.Walsall led after just six minutes as Jack Fitzwater glanced Erhun Oztumer's free-kick past keeper George Long via his outstretched thigh.They doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Julien Ngoy flicked a ball over one Dons defender before outsprinting another to slot a cool finish under Long.But Nicky Devlin's rash challenge on Andy Barcham handed Wimbledon a lifeline two minutes into the second half.Unlucky Walsall keeper Liam Roberts saved Lyle Taylor's penalty with his legs and palmed away the loose ball only for Joe Pigott to slam home from close range.Taylor then fired an acrobatic volley off the post but latched onto keeper Long's 65th-minute clearance to thump home a superb strike from just inside the box.And Wimbledon won it deep into stoppage time as Parrett lashed home from the spot after Kory Roberts fouled Taylor.Victory pushed the Dons above Walsall, with the sides sitting four and three points respectively above the drop zone.

                Oldham ease relegation fears with draw against Walsall

                Oldham and Walsall eased their relegation fears with an entertaining 1-1 draw at Boundary Park which all but relegated Bury from Sky Bet League One.Oldham created the bulk of the chances as they eased three points clear of the relegation places. The draw left Walsall three points better off.Oldham striker Duckens Nazon made a lively start, firing over from 25 yards after being teed up by Eoin Doyle.The Haiti international then produced an acrobatic overhead kick which dipped inches over the crossbar.The Saddlers went in front in the 33rd minute when West Brom loanee Jack Fitzwater lashed in a rebound after Luke Leahy's header had been palmed onto the crossbar by Oldham keeper Johny Placide.Nazon levelled a minute before the break, beating two men before hammering home past Liam Roberts from the edge of the box.After the break Oldham's Jack Byrne curled a free-kick narrowly over the top, while Nazon's 25-yard piledriver was brilliantly saved by Roberts.Placide produced a super save to keep out Jon Guthrie's header late on.
