      Pools end the season on a high with victory at Tranmere

      Hartlepool ended a season to forget on a high, with a 2-1 victory ensuring Tranmere head into the play-offs on the back of successive home defeats.Andy Cook had the first chance of the game for Rovers but goalkeeper Scott Loach held his low shot.Pools responded, with Jake Cassidy not too far away with an overhead-kick attempt, while Lewis Hawkins' volley was saved by the legs of Scott Davies.Loach produced a stunning stop to deny James Norwood as he raced through on goal, but it was the visitors who were ahead at the break.Liam Donnelly, back in the side after injury, slotted home a penalty to send the Hartlepool fans - most dressed as clowns - wild.Substitute Rhys Oates came close to doubling Hartlepool's advantage with a chipped effort after the break, while at the other end Cook dragged a shot wide from close in.Oates did make it 2-0 with a neat flick, but Tranmere were straight back in the game when Jeff Hughes curled home a free-kick.Rovers pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Hartlepool stood firm.

        Hartlepool clinch survival with win over Orient

        Hartlepool secured their place in next season's National League after Louis Laing scored the only goal to beat Leyton Orient at Victoria Park. The north-east club climbed to 17th, seven points clear of Woking in 21st place who have two games to play.Orient dominated the opening exchanges, forcing a number of corners, while Hartlepool's first sight of goal was a Ryan Donaldson header that was cleared off the line in the 16th minute.Three minutes later, Orient missed a great chance to take the lead when Josh Koroma shot wide when presented with a one-on-one with Scott Loach.Laing eased a lot of the tension inside Victoria Park when he gave Hartlepool the lead in the 38th minute, finding the net with a header over Orient keeper Dean Brill.Devante Rodney was sent off for Hartlepool in injury time for two bookable offences, but his side hung on to claim the three points that will keep them in the National League next season.

          Stunning Carl Magnay strike earns Hartlepool victory

          Hartlepool came out on top in a relegation six-pointer at Barrow as Carl Magnay's stunning strike earned them a 2-1 victory.Pools, who look set to be taken over by Raj Singh this week, moved above their opponents and three points clear of the bottom four with their first away win since October.The visitors dominated the early stages but it was Barrow who took the lead against the run of play in the 18th minute when former Pools striker Luke James was played in by Donovan Makoma and he slotted the ball under goalkeeper Scott Loach.Hartlepool hauled themselves level in first-half stoppage-time when a long ball over the top was flicked on by Jake Cassidy and when Rhys Oates collided with Steve Arnold, the loose ball fell to Conor Newton who scored from a tight angle.The visitors took the lead early in the second half when defender Magnay let fly with an audacious 35-yard effort which sailed into the top corner.Michael Woods brought a good save from Arnold with a low shot and substitute Devante Rodney saw a curling first-time strike clawed away as Hartlepool comfortably held on.

            Matthew Bates suffers defeat on return to Hartlepool dugout

            Matthew Bates' interim spell in charge of Hartlepool got off to a losing start as Ebbsfleet claimed a 1-0 win which did not do their dominance justice.The visitors started on the front foot and could have had the game won in the opening seven minutes.Corey Whitely saw a shot rebound off a post in the first minute, Pools goalkeeper Scott Loach tipped a Luke Coulson effort over the crossbar and the same player should have done better when defender Louis Laing slipped.It was no surprise when Ebsfleet took the lead in the 16th minute, Dean Rance heading home a Coulson cross at the far post.Whitely went close again, while at the other end midfielder Michael Woods blazed over from 10 yards with the goal gaping.Hartlepool started the second half brightly, with Jake Cassidy seeing a shot blocked and Devante Rodney firing over when well placed.Conor Newton's glancing header was saved by Fleet goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore, while visiting striker Danny Kedwell saw a goal ruled out for offside late on.

              Ten-man Carlisle equal club record with win over Hartlepool

              Ten-man Carlisle edged out Hartlepool 3-2 in a thriller at Brunton Park, extending their unbeaten run to 13 games and equalling their best-ever league start.Jabo Ibehre gave Carlisle an interval lead and the game burst into life in the second half after Shaun Miller was sent off for two yellow cards.Lewis Alessandra and Padraig Amond twice levelled for Hartlepool with Danny Grainger netting Carlisle's second and Michael Raynes heading the winner.A purposeful opening from the visitors had Carlisle on the back foot, with Lewis Hawkins and Nathan Thomas fizzing shots narrowly off target.However, it was Carlisle who struck first in the 20th minute when a quick break down the left and a pinpoint cross from Miller provided Ibehre with a simple side-foot finish from six yards.The home side spurned a great chance to make it two before the break when Miller seized on a loose ball just inside the area only to lash his shot over the crossbar.Carlisle missed a double opportunity four minutes into the second half when goalkeeper Trevor Carson just managed to get a hand to Jason Kennedy's close-range effort and Ibehre ballooned the loose ball high over from four yards when it looked easier to score.Miller, having been booked in the first half for kicking the ball away, was shown a second yellow and sent off in the 57th minute for deliberate handball.Carlisle's 10 men were up against it in the 65th minute when Alessandra cut in from the left to power an unstoppable shot past Mark Gillespie for the equaliser.Grainger restored Carlisle's lead three minutes later, belting a low 25-yard shot into the bottom corner after receiving a short free-kick from Nicky Adams.Pools made it 2-2 in the 75th minute when Amond, at close range, was able to apply the finish after Gillespie had saved Billy Paynter's original drive, then Carlisle went straight back in front five minutes later when Raynes scored with a towering header from Grainger's corner.

                Hartlepool held by late Crawley spot-kick

                James Collins' late penalty denied Hartlepool their first Sky Bet League Two home win of the season as Crawley earned a 1-1 draw at the Northern Gas & Power Stadium.Collins thundered home his spot-kick with 16 minutes remaining to ensure the spoils were shared after Lewis Alessandra's first goal for the club put Pools ahead.Hartlepool did not look like a side with such a poor home record in the opening exchanges, taking the lead in the 12th minute.Having been hauled over by Andre Blackman, Nathan Thomas failed to make it seven goals in as many games from the spot - yet Alessandra was on hand to head home the rebound.Crawley were unfortunate not to level immediately as Enzio Boldewijn and Jimmy Smith rattled the woodwork in quick succession.The Red Devils took control thereafter and equalised in the 74th minute, Collins netting having been pushed to the floor by Jake Carroll.And Crawley were only denied a last-ditch winner by some brilliance from Hartlepool defender Scott Harrison, who somehow stopped Collins from tapping into an empty net after Billy Clifford's curler hit the crossbar.

                  Padraig Amond returns to haunt Grimsby

                  Padraig Amond came back to haunt Grimsby as his brace helped Hartlepool to a 3-0 win over his old club.The Irishman, who was the Mariners' top scorer last season as they won promotion back to the Football League, struck twice in the first half with Pools' leading marksman Nathan Thomas adding an impudent third after the break as Craig Hignett's men ended Town's run of back-to-back victories.Amond's first came after he pounced on the rebound after Lewis Alessandra had hit a post before heading home a second when left unmarked in the box.Grimsby responded well after the restart and saw three quick-fire efforts kept out by Hartlepool goalkeeper Trevor Carson before the visitors went on to extend their advantage with Thomas's superb turn and lob over James McKeown from the edge of the box.Shaun Tuton dragged an effort wide as the game limped to its conclusion and Alessandra was denied by McKeown, but Hartlepool saw out the win with minimum fuss, ending their run of three consecutive draws.
