Everton manager David Moyes has described his team's last-gasp 2-2 draw with Liverpool as a "fitting" way to mark the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and admitted it was "mayhem" inside the stadium on Wednesday night.

Defender James Tarkowski secured a point for Everton in the 98th minute after goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah had cancelled out Beto's early strike.

It was a pulsating encounter which boiled over after the final whistle, with Everton's Abdoulaye Doucouré and Liverpool's Curtis Jones both shown second yellow cards, while Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also sent off.

"It was mayhem all game," Moyes said in his post-match news conference. "It was a bit of an old-fashioned throwback in some ways. The bit after the game is not what we should be talking about. I do know Doucouré got a yellow card which saw him get a red. The place was boiling hot all night here, emotional. It was an incredible atmosphere inside the stadium."

The result sees Everton move up to 15th in the Premier League table while Liverpool extend their lead at the top to seven points.

"As an Everton manager I had some brilliant times here before, some unbelievable moments, but I think tonight because I'm just back and having had very little time with the players, seeing the growing impact the players are having on the supporters and vice versa, that's the big thing," Moyes said.

"We want to get back to being a big club again. We're not there yet. We've got a long way to go. We've got a job to do this year first of all to stay a Premier League club but then we have to try to kick on."

Wednesday's game was the last Merseyside derby to be staged at Goodison Park, with Everton set to move to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

"I think it was hugely important that Evertonians get to finish off at this stadium as best as they can," Moyes said. "Overall, I just feel like the support in here was unbelievable tonight. I think it was fitting that they got an end like they did."
