May was an historic month for African football as Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala became the first ever women's European champion from the continent when Barcelona claimed Women's Champions League victory.
She is far from the only Nigerian player with cause for celebration, however. This month's Power Rankings include five Nigerian players, two Banyana Banyana greats, two Ghana internationals, and a Cameroon star.
Just as the season began to wind down in Spain, several African players staked their claim for top 10 places with impressive performances in the USA and Sweden.
1. Asisat Oshoala, Barcelona
Oshoala has struggled with injuries and battled to get in the Barcelona team even when fit in recent months, but it is impossible to look past her at the top of the Women's Power Rankings after her key role in making history.
The first African woman to win the UEFA top prize was not a passive bystander in Barcelona's campaign by any means. She was on target against PSV Eindhoven in the round of 32 and Fortuna Hjørring in the last 16, before netting home and away against Manchester City in the quarter-finals. She also slammed home a would-be goal in the final, but it was disallowed.
Oshoala has been impressive for Barcelona over the course of this season and also in past campaigns. Her success is unquestionably a result of a slice of luck finally meeting preparation.
2. Estelle Johnson, Gotham FC
Cameroon's Johnson has been a rock in the heart of the Gotham defence in the opening matches of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).
Gotham lost the NWSL Challenge Cup final to Portland Thorns on penalties and subsequently started their league campaign with a 1-0 win over Houston Dash, before a 0-0 draw with Chicago Red Stars.
Although they sunk to another defeat to Portland in the NWSL, Gotham have established themselves as one of the teams to watch. Johnson has added steel at the back with 18 clearances, five blocks and six interceptions in three games.
3. Toni Payne, Sevilla
Nigeria international Payne has been in fine form for Sevilla, continuing her steady improvement in a season which has also seen her make her breakthrough for the Super Falcons.
In the Copa de La Reina quarter-finals, Payne set Claudia Pina up for a surprise opener against eventual European champions Barcelona. Barça fought back to win the game 4-1, but Payne's personal form continued into their next match.
This time, she was able to help her side to victory as her 41st minute strike all but sealed a 3-1 win over Deportivo de La Coruña in the Primera Iberdrola.
Inconsistency has been costly for Sevilla this season and they followed up a strong performance against Barcelona and an impressive league victory with defeats to Madrid CFF and Granadilla Tenerife. Nevertheless, Payne's performances have been worthy of recognition.
4. Uchenna Kanu, Linköpings
A steady scorer in last season's Damallsvenskan, Kanu has been sublime at the start of the new campaign.
After finishing last month with a goal against AIK, she started May off with the winner against Häcken and a brace against Piteå. Although the month ended with a 0-0 draw to Växjö, Kanu has nevertheless given a tremendous account of herself.
At the age of 23, she is bound to get better and is on course to become a major asset for the Super Falcons.
5. Janine van Wyk, Glasgow City
Van Wyk has been vital in Glasgow City's title challenge since returning from a lengthy injury layoff. The South Africa captain contributed at both ends of the pitch in May.
She began the month by playing her part in a 3-1 win over Spartans, making a key goal-line clearance. Van Wyk saw her penalty saved in a 0-0 draw with Celtic, but helped her side in defence once again.
The 34-year-old not only helped City to an 8-0 drubbing of Forfar Farmington and a third straight clean sheet, but also assisted Priscila Chinchilla for Glasgow's third goal.
She was a key creative influence once again in the match against Motherwell and her low long-range drive sealed City's 4-2 win. Van Wyk, not traditionally known for ger goalscoring, smashed an even more impressive shot from distance into the top corner during the 4-1 win over Hearts.
6. Ode Fulutudilu, Glasgow City
Fulutudilu was a nominee for the SWPL Player of the Month award in April and carried her fine form into May.
She scored in the 3-1 win over Spartans and set up Priscila Chinchilla for City's second goal in a crucial 2-0 victory over Rangers.
Fulutudilu was once again on the scoresheet as Glasgow City rounded up the month with a 6-2 drubbing of Spartans. She remains a key creative influence and one of the SWPL's most lethal goalscorers.
7. Anam Imo, Piteå
Imo scored the winner in the 1-0 Damallsvenskan triumph over Växjö on 9 May and followed that up with another goal in Piteå's next match, the 4-3 defeat to Kanu's Linköpings.
Piteå rounded the month off with a victory over Djurgårdens after defeats to Örebro and Rosengård. They will hope to carry their newfound momentum into June, but regardless of whether or not that happens, it is likely that 20-year-old Imo's best days are well ahead of her.
8. Jennifer Cudjoe, Gotham FC
Cudjoe continues to quietly do the dirty work for Gotham in the middle of the park and deserves recognition for her steady performances.
'Kaka' remains a regular starter for Gotham even after the transition from Challenge Cup to league and averages 41 successful passes per game in the NWSL.
She drops below Johnson in the rankings not due to any deficiency on Cudjoe's part, but simply because Johnson has been superb.
9. Chiamaka Nnadozie, Paris FC
Nnadozie has grown from strength to strength in goal for Paris FC this season. The 20-year-old Nigeria international got her month off to a fine start with a superb performance in the 4-0 drubbing of Issy.
Nnadozie kept another clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Dijon, although that was sandwiched between Paris Saint-Germain (3-2) and Le Havre (1-0).
The experience which she continues to gain at the highest level, among some of world football's finest teams, appears to have given Nnadozie an edge.
10. Elizabeth Addo, Djurgårdens
Addo made a brave decision when she joined Djurgårdens from the illustrious North Carolina Courage in the NWSL. Her new club has gotten the Damallsvenskan season off to a difficult start, but the Ghana captain got on the scoresheet in a 3-2 defeat to Hammarby.
Sweden is familiar territory for the former Kvarnsveden player and she will hope to help her team return to winning ways sooner rather than later.
